What is the Purpose of Lent?

It is a season of the church that encourages us to…

Learn more of Jesus "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." -Matthew 11:29

Examine yourself "A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself... But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment." -I Corinthians 11:28-31

Not forsaking the assembling "Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling or yourselves together as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another and so much the more ye see the day approaching." -Hebrews 10:24-35

Try yourself with fasting and prayer "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do,... put oil on your head and wash your face , so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." -Matthew 6:16-18

During this season of Lent, challenge yourself to carry out the four purposes of Lent. You will open yourself to the power of the Spirit and discover a discipline within that will not only carry you through Easter, but for the rest of your life. May this be a time when we discover, in a new way, how being a disciple is about discipline, and how in both we are set free.

 Faith @ 5th

The Bishop’s Visitation: Sunday was a great day with Bishop Smith! He was with us for both the 8:00 and the 10:00 services. The Baptism, Confirmations and Reaffirmations were full of the Holy Spirit and celebration. Congratulations to all: Sheldon Smith, baptized; Lanae Dailey, Jim Full, Lynn Randall, Rodney Ingraham, James Wright and Anna Zivkovich, confirmed; and Linda Ingraham, Betty Rodda, Jean Lewis, Suzie Widmeyer, Betsy Curry, reaffirmed.

Many thanks as well to all those who made the day so special and so smooth: altar guild, acolytes, ushers, flower coordinators, musicians, lectors, sponsors, and, of course, Hospitality and the great reception they provided. (Coffee after 8:00 could catch on!)

The Bishop also gathered with the Vestry after the reception time. It was a good meeting framed around the bishop’s question: What excites you about Trinity, and what challenges you about Trinity? Each person was required to answer and no answer could be a repeat of one already given. It was a time of great listening for me. I invite you to ask your vestry members what they said. They are listed on the front page of The Times.

Pastoral Care: One of the things we all believe to be an important part of the richness of our community of faith is our care for one another. When there is an accident or an emergency or illness we want to know that our community, priest and people, will be there as needed and as appropriate.

One of the dilemmas for clergy is how to be accessible to the parish without being so tied down that he or she in inaccessible to family, etc. The telephone helps, but if you are away from the numbers people know, you are out of touch.; after all, you cannot be either at the church or at home all the time.

My desire to insure pastoral response, especially in times of crisis, has prompted the following offering. We now have a system that allows you to remember just one phone number, the church’s number. In the event of an emergency you can call 422-3362 any time of day or night. If nobody is here you will get a message that says, "If this is an emergency wait for the tone, leave your message (include who you are, what is wrong, and a phone number) and then press #-9-1-1 and hang up. When you do that, the system will trigger a pager. As long as I am in the area, which is most of the time, you can expect my prompt response. If I am away, arrangements will be made for appropriate "coverage," which may be a warden or a specially trained lay pastoral care visitor. They will be able to assist or contact a priest if needed.

Do you have to use this system? No, you can still try to reach me directly, but if I am not at home or at the church you could be unsuccessful. The goals here are to 1)minister to you in times of need, 2)make contact simple in difficult circumstances, and 3) increase accessibility and flexibility. Let’s give it a try, and you let me know.

Love,   SCOTT

 Mothering Sunday

We celebrate Mothering Sunday this year on March 22. On this day you will find special envelopes for the Episcopal Church Women’s donation for "Love in Action." These "Love in Action" offerings support several Women’s Ministries projects in our state. Let us give prayerful thought to our giving for these ministries. Enclose your gift in the "Love in Action" envelope and place it in the offering plate on March 22 or mail it to the church.
