CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY, April 13

 Faith @ 5th

Am I the only one that feels a bit breathless? I mean, can it really be time already for us to make our first journey together through Holy Week and Easter? As I look at the calendar it is undeniably true.

This coming Sunday brings us to the energy and excitement of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Palms waving and shouts of Hosanna, Hosanna! Then all quickly changes as we learn of the events which lead to Jesus’ capture, trial, and crucifixion. It, Palm Sunday, is a day of extreme highs and deep lows.

From Palm Sunday we are bidden to take Holy Week one piece at a time. On Maundy Thursday we are asked to join the disciples and Jesus in the Upper Room. Can we bear to be served, as the disciples were served, by Jesus? We will allow another to wash our feet? Taste the bread and wine. Now whenever you do this from now on, "do it in remembrance of me." Then we are invited by Jesus to join him in the garden. Stay with me, watch and pray. From late in the evening until midnight we keep vigil in the garden with Jesus, vigil until the soldiers come and take him away.

In my office hangs a small copy of an old "B.C." comic strip. It reads: When history has recorded it all; events both happy and sad, Good Friday shall reign as the worst, and the best, that mankind has ever had. These simple words still bring perspective, and a bit of a chill up my spine. On this day the church will be open through 3:00 in the afternoon. Beginning at 2:45 we will walk the Stations of the Cross (using a bit different form from our Friday’s in Lent) and remember on this day Jesus’ walk for us and for our salvation. The Good Friday liturgy will be at 7:00 p.m. (I know that there are many other things going on in town on this night. Let me remind you, thought, that this is a time for our parish family to be together.)

As many of you have heard me say, the Great Vigil of Easter is the most important service of the Christian’s year. I will spend the evening on April 1st teaching about this magnificent service. I cannot urge you enough to join with our sister congregations on Saturday evening at 7:00 at St. Luke’s, Marietta for this profound celebration.

Easter Day will bring us to the grand celebration of the Resurrection. Music at both services. Festival music with brass accompanying our organ and choir. Early (8:00) or late (10:00), both will be grand. Plan now to be with your parish family, and plan to bring a friend.

Love,

An Honest Prayer

Dear Lord, so far today I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, haven’t been greedy, nasty, selfish, or over-indulgent. I’m very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed. And from then on, I’m probably going to need a lot more help. Amen.
