Week of April 6 & 13, 1998 Holy Week I am writing this Palm Sunday afternoon. The outdoors is beckoning. Its hard to believe that Christs Passion started on this day several thousand years ago...and I, so newly returned from a land of vacationing, find it hard to focus on the Lenten discipline. In Florida, there is a Trinity Church too, one which follows our tradition...a much larger church than our Trinity, but I sense not as loving. Perhaps that is because I am a visitor, and visitors sometimes only peek through windows and dont see all that there is.
The Florida Trinity has several choirs, and a "Praise Band," with guitars, violins, flutes, percussion and synthesizer, which along with the organ, accompany hymns. Yes, this is an Episcopal Church, and the pews are packed with parishioners and visitors, responding in their way to Christs call.
As our Rector says, this is a week for reflection. As we follow
Jesus tortuous path to Calvary, let us give thanks for all the ways we as Christians
can love and follow our Lord.
- Betsy Smith
CHURCH OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY, April 13
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
As I write this I am deeply aware that this is the first Holy Week, Easter and Easter Week we share together. Yet another in a list of firsts which we share as our initial year unfolds.
I dont know about you, but I find this period filled with expectation. It is the most important two weeks of the year for any Christian. Yet, year after year the challenge remains a simple, yet very difficult, one: How to live life in the fullness of the redemption and resurrection these two weeks bring us?
Ultimately I believe the answer to "how" is an individual one, but I also believe that the individual "how" is always discovered when a person is in community with others seeking to discover their "how" as well. Through the love and support of the Easter Community (the Church) we have a continual touchstone of Gods love to encourage us on our way as we seek to know individually Christs redeeming love and the joy of living a resurrected life.
A most prayerful Holy Week, and Blessed Easter (remember like Christmas is 12 days long, Easter is 50 days!).
Love, Scott+
PS The long anticipated House Church gatherings will begin after Easter and continue through most of May. When you are contacted by your host or hostess, please plan to join them. I will be at each of the twenty-or-so gatherings to listen to you and your hopes and dreams, loves and concerns as they relate to Trinity Church, her ministry and your place in both of these. Many thanks to the vestry and others who are hosting, and to Betty Rodda and Betty Matthews for their organization and groundwork. SSH+
