Virginia Weeks of June 1st & June 8th, 1998 (Last updated 09/12/99) The Day of Pentecost was a wonderfully festive occasion at Trinity Church, Sunday May 31st, when the day was celebrated with a red banner procession at the 10:30 service, a Baptism (Quentin Henry Jack Oliphant, son of Kevin and Nicole, and grandson of Kevin and Rae), a joyous Eucharist and lots of parishioners wearing "red" to mark the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples and to us! Last Sunday also was the last morning of Church School for our young people, until Fall. The children received gifts, and the teachers were acknowledged and applauded. Among those receiving recognition were teachers Marion Culbertson (who was not able to be present); Jennifer Currey, Betsy Curry, Julie Gyongyosi, Becky Johnson, Sandi Lawson, Kelly Miller, and Mary Jane Zivkovich. COLOR ME HAPPY! Also on the Day of Pentecost, Fr. Hunter joyfully introduced Connie Waterman, daughter of Helen and Chet, as our new Director of Religious Education! Connie is extremely well qualified with a Masters degree, teaching experience in music, and a love of her Church. Although she takes office June 1st, she will be in and out until Fall, as she honors other commitments. |

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
The focus article of this Times should be the letter which appears on the following page. Therefore, what follows are a few "Bits n Pieces" from our church life. Please give the letter the honorable time and attention it deserves.
To Betsy what could possibly be said except, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." For 19 years of your love of God spread as ink across these pages, and for all the Rectors with whom you served
Thank you, and God bless you.
Love, Scott+
Dear Trinity Family,
The time has come for me to lay down my typewriter on your behalf! Soon, even carbon paper will not be available, and ribbons are getting hard to find!
Seriously, for almost 19 years, off and on, I have written the "TIMES", prepared most of the bulletin boards for the changes of the church seasons, done special writing assignments, called people, urged people, nudged people, attended staff meetings and Vestry meetings, and done other odds and ends including, hopefully, ideas and planning.
I have loved doing it! My motive has been to help hold us together through the seven changes we have had in priests since Jack and I first came to Trinity. Now that first priest is a Bishop, and the seventh is our already beloved Scott, who is leading us to blessedness!
I remember one time when I was distressed because parishioners had not turned out in any great number for a special choir concert, and I wrote about this in the "Tidings" as the "TIMES" was called. Ken Price (Rector then) chided me for being negative, and reminded me of the need to be joyous when working for the Lord. If I have been that for you, then I have succeeded in my small ministry.
Thank you for all you have been and are to me truly my family in so many ways!
Faithfully, Betsy
P.S. Beautiful Kim Lantz will be your new editor. You couldnt have a better! She will be Kim Lantz Couch when the next "TIMES" comes!
It was a very special morning for the women of Trinity Church who attended the annual Eucharist and Luncheon of the Episcopal Churchwomen, this year at the lovely home of Lynn Randall.
The day was warm and summery, with a slight breeze touching our faces. Mary Thornburghs music on the harp was a fitting introduction to the outdoor service, as birds joined her gentle notes.
Luncheon was served in individual baskets tied with ribbon, and bore the unmistakable thought of Carol Ralsten, with delicious portions prepared by Trinitys good cooks! Harriett DeHoffs behind the scenes hard work at set-up, (not to mention George), Shirley Lawrence-Berreys careful leadership as ECW president, along with the help of others, made this gathering of Christian women quietly beautiful.
Shirley reminded all of the Episcopal Churchwomens Retreat planned for September 18-20, and sponsored by the Womens Ministries Committee of the Diocese, at the Peterkin Conference Center. She urged as many to go as possible and asked that those interested see her for more information. The speaker for the morning was Jennifer Eaton, American Red Cross Emergency Services Director.
Grandparents Barbara and Charlie Allman joyously announce the birth of Lauren Hope Adkins, 6 lbs. 8 oz., born to daughter Cathy and Shawn Adkins, May 29th in Huntington. Congratulations to all!

CHURCH SCHOOL & SUMMER As stated elsewhere in the "TIMES", Church School has ended for the summer months, but there will be a Nursery available under the very capable direction of Patsy Buckles. Young children (and older) are invited to attend church with their parents. Fr. Hunter will give a childrens homily each Sunday.
Outreach Words from Carol Outreach chairman Carol Olson reminds us of the womens "Raise the Roof" project for Habitat for Humanity. Please let her know if you are interested; also if you can help supply lunch for workers June 19th, 26th and 27th.

FOOD FOR THE POOR Sunday June 21st Trinity Church will entertain a guest priest, the Rev. Jay Pierce. Fr. Pierce is a representative for the "Food For The Poor" effort, whose mission statement is that it is Gods instrument to help the materially poor and to renew the poor in spirit. The ministry is shaped by the belief that Christ is alive and can be served directly by serving those in greatest need. . If you can host Fr. Pierce, please let us know. --Carol Olson
P.S. Did you see "our Carol" on TV the other morning? Wow!
GRADUATES, ANYONE?
We have not heard of anyone graduating from high school or college this Spring, but if there are any Trinity graduates among us, please let the Parish Office know!Book Sale Update: Trinitys annual used Book Sale will be November 2nd through 5th! Books have already been coming in, and official "marking" is set to start June 23rd and 24th, beginning at 10 a.m. each morning, and continuing as needed. plan now to help!
THE CHRISTOPHER MINISTRY -- The name Christopher means, "Christ-bearer." Just as the beggar who was Christ needed a ride on Christopher's shoulders to cross the river, there are people at Trinity who need a ride to get to worship or other parish events. There is an need for a "transportation ministry" at Trinity someone or ones to assist in bringing those to Church on Sundays who are unable to drive themselves, and/or drive at various church events. Please contact Carol Ralsten or the Rector if you can help!
