A Call to the Observance of a Holy Lent
Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great
devotion the days of our Lords passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation

was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
[You are invited], therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on Gods holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, [your presence is requested at one of the services in observance of Ash Wednesday listed on the front page of the Times.]

| Connies Corner Several of the church school kids and parents made an outing to see "Prince of Egypt." I think a good time was had by all. I was amazed at how attentive the kids were because the pace of the movie was kind of slow. There were also places where the action was not defined well. However, it proves how well the kids know the story of Moses, because they didnt seem confused. Maybe they had questions when they got home. The only question I heard was, "What does smite mean?". All in all, it is a movie worth seeing. The rating is PG, and does show life as it was at the time complete with slave beatings. I didnt find it as disturbing as I had thought from reading reviews. In any case, you may want to check it out before deciding if you want your younger children seeing it. Look for more outings to come! Peace, ConniePlease let Connie know if you are interested in supervising a Lenten program for
children. It will consist of four Wednesday night lessons coinciding with the Adult Lenten
programs. This is a great opportunity for former Sunday schoolteachers, or those of you
considering teaching next year. |

What is Lent?
Lent is a very special season in the Church Year. It is forty days long. Its begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until the celebration of the Great Vigil of Easter. Lent is a time of simplicity, prayer, reading the Bible, and it is a time of thinking and talking with others about our relationship with God. It is also a time for us to think about the things we do which hurt God, and to ask Jesus to help us change so that we do not continue to hurt God and others.
At church the color green is replaced by the color purple, the color of penitence (being sorry of something done wrong). Most shiny or fancy things are taken out of the church for Lent. This is to help us focus prayer
The English word "Lent" comes from an Anglo-Saxon (a people and language which came before English) word meaning, "spring" or "springtime."
BRAIN TEASER Remember that Lent is 40 days long. Now count the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter on the calendar. Does it equal 40? If not, why?
