Thoughts from a Neighbor
Lent is a time to think about spiritual journeys. It is a time to look inward so that our outward active life can be more centered and integrated.
It is sad that many Americans dont even know they have a spiritual life; for them life is only a matter of accomplishments. In this mind set, life becomes all about ME and what I DO. Failure in such a mindset is devastating because all my value is tied up in what I am DOING.
A spiritual approach to life recognizes that my life is only a piece of the greater life and that my life is connected to a great, richer, and more wonderful source of power. Spiritual disciples strive to be in tune with the power of God and to live in it. The spiritual life works to harmonize being and doing, listening and acting. The spiritual life is not about withdrawing from the world. It is a pursuit of harmony that empowers me for action. When my action emerges from my silence and listening, I can be more powerful and effective, carried forth by an inspiration that is greater than I am.

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
There is much to be said about last week as it ushered in Lent of this year. The return of the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper was a great success thanks to the vision of Betsy Curry. Extra kudos go to Betsy, Beth West and Sandi Lawson for their creativity in decorating and the gathering of supplies for the event. By best estimates we had more than 60 people come and plow down pancakes. It was great to see the men of the church making things happen together. And, one of the highlights of the evening was the outreach to some of our "neighbor" young people. Without a doubt they will look upon Trinity in a different way now.
On Shrove Tuesday something new appeared at Trinity. They seemed to come from nowhere appearing suddenly in the Trinity Hall kitchen. They were red and they were silver. They were (gasp) hats . Men of Trinity Hats. About twenty of these hats made their way around as various "men of Trinity" came to help and / or to eat! With the hats come a hope and a challenge. The hope is to see them often: in the streets and highways and byways of this community; at work and at play. The challenge to the men of Trinity is this: create events, projects, missions, study groups, fellowship opportunities and any other reason you can find to assemble these hats with living breathing M.O.T.s under them.
Now about Ash Wednesday . (I guess this is where the rector earns the big bucks.) Ash Wednesday is a day whose importance in the Christian Year and Christian life cannot be overstated. I have heard it said, in more than one place, that passes for Easter services should be issued at the end of Ash Wednesday services. Meaning, of course, that if one does not attend on Ash Wednesday, one would not have a "pass" to attend on Easter Day. I am not about to do that, but the point is solid one. As I talked with someone about the lack of Ash Wednesday attendance this year, I said I prefer to put things in the positive. So let me say it this way: I am positive that I didnt see many parishioners this past Ash Wednesday. And, I am positive I will see more of at Lenten worship and, certainly, at next Ash Wednesday. Plan now!
Faithfully yours,
Scott

Outreach
Please place in basket at the back of the church Lenten Habitat Houses As you know, in January the Vestry decided to join in a joint Wood County Episcopal Church sponsorship of a Habitat House. Our goal is to collectively raise $15,000 in 1999 for a house to be built in 2000. You will be receiving a Lenten Calendar and Habitat House shortly. The |
two items together will form the first step in
our sponsorship effort. Please use the Lenten calendar and the house together so that we can "break the bank" to build a house. Thank you! Three Little Words
There are three little words
That are so hard to say
Sorry,
Forgive, and
Obey.
But these three little words
Will change your whole day
Sorry,
Forgive, and
Obey.
So if you want to be happy
Then this is Gods way
Tell Him,
"Im sorry,
Please forgive me, and
Ill obey."
Dont forget to say
These three little words
To your parents and others, too.
"Im sorry,
Forgive me,"
Are hard words to say.
But when said from the heart
They bring great joy your way.
