Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

If you are observant, especially observant, you found that there is a new name under the heading of Editor on the masthead of The Times. That change affords me two very important opportunities.

First, I get to thank Kim Couch for the wonderful work she has done while serving in this capacity. She has labored diligently as she has juggled a new marriage, increasing demands at work, her work on the Vestry and (all you have to do is read the newspaper) a host of involvement and other obligations. Her Times will be remembered as some of the best ever.

Kim, please accept my sincere thanks and deep appreciation for a job well done. In my world following a editorship like the one you followed (Betsy Smith) is like being the coach who has to follow Dean Smith at UNC or Bear Bryant at Alabama. What courage, and, again, what a good job you have done.

The second opportunity is to welcome Betsy Curry to her new ministry of Editor of The Times. Certainly a person with many gifts and talents, Betsy is an RN, a mother of Nicholas, Clint and Sean, and has Craig as a husband. The lifelong Episcopalian in the family, she serves on the Altar Guild, on the Worship and Music Committee and is part of the "Moms" group. She is very interested in the continued development and effectiveness of our parish communications, especially The Times.

Please join me in thanking Kim and welcoming Betsy!

On the personal side, many thank-you’s for all the cards and other remembrances on the occasion of my birthday — the cards, balloons, cake and pie at the Wednesday evening supper were great. In case you did not hear, some "Killer B’s" contracted with a shadowy company to have a few pink flamingos land in the front yard of the Rectory on Thursday. At first I thought it was my sister, but when the sign said, "Fr Scott" she was off the hook. Turns out the "Killer B’s" (as they have been tagged) were a certain new Times editor and a person whose name I won’t mention but her initials are B(eth) W(est). [With that much creative time on their hands I’ve got to get them more involved at Trinity.]

In closing — Lynette Neilson was stunned (pleasantly) as we added several additional tables to the setup last Wednesday. Over 60 came to hear Old Man Rivers, eat, pray, etc. I believe Lynette’s words were, "It looked like the lasagna supper!" Many thanks to "Old Man" and Pat, to Lynette, and to Bill and Martha Douglas for all their work.

Faithfully,

Scott+

A Prayer for Lent

O Lord, open my eyes that I may see more clearly the condition of my soul. If there is darkness, mean-spiritedness, egotistic pride...or worse within, cleanse me from all unrighteousness Renew a right spirit within me and make me truly Christ-like in all my thoughts and actions. And when I begin to edge away from your will, please stir up my conscience until I am in harmony with you again. In Christ’s name. Amen.

Connie’s Corner

Kids! Gotta love them………….

Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God’s omnipotence did not extend to his kids. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing God said to them was:
"Don’t"
"Don’t what?" Adam asked.
"Don’t eat the forbidden fruit," said God.
"Forbidden fruit? Really? Where is it?" Adam and Eve asked, jumping up and down excitedly.
"It’s over there," said God, wondering why he hadn’t stopped after making the elephants. A few minutes later, God saw the kids having an apple break and He was very angry.
"Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?" the First Parent asked.
"Uh huh," Adam replied.
"Then why did you do it?" God asked exasperated.
"I dunno," Adam answered.
God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus, the pattern was set and it has never changed. But, there is a reassurance in this story. If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give your children wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be so hard on yourself. If God had trouble handling His children, what makes you think it should be a piece of cake for you?
