| Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
We are now in the midst of the most holy time in the Christian calendar year. My
message this week is simple. May you, by your prayers and participation in the life and
worship of the community of faith find the new life in Christ which is accomplished
between his entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper in the Upper Room, the night hours in
the Garden of Gethsemane, and his imprisonment, sentencing, crucifixion, death and
resurrection.
To those who travel this Holy Week and Easter, go with God and worship wherever you may
be.
Blessings & peace,

Trinity Episcopal Church of Parkersburg, WV has
commissioned Richard D. Wetzel to compose a work for Organ and Brass Quartet appropriate
for the Easter Service. Wetzels work will be given its premiere performance by
members of the brass faculty of Ohio University, John Schlabach
(trumpet) and Tony Baker (trombone), Ohio University graduate students Michael Flygar and
C. Neil Parsons, and Trinity organist Arlene Wetzel.
The composition is based upon the Easter Sequence, Victimae Paschali
laudes, one of only five melodies in this liturgical category remaining in use in the
20th century. Thousands of sequences were created between 850 and 1150 AD, but most were
deleted or suppressed by the Council of Trent in the 16th century. Victimae Paschali
laudes appears in German manuscripts of the 11th century.
Wetzels setting utilizes 20th century harmonic, rhythmic and metric
techniques within a Baroque concertato texture and form. Dr. Wetzel has been a member of
the music faculty of Ohio University since 1970. His liturgical music is published in the
Presbyterian Worshipbook (1972); The Hymnal of the United Church of Christ (1974);
and Episcopal Hymnal (1982).

The following is a copy of the
letter received from Old Man Rivers dated March 11, 1999:
Dear Brother Scott and Church,
Pat and I had a marvelous time at the dinner last evening. [March 10]
Thank-you so much for having us with you. Sometimes I am a bit nervous when meeting a new
congregation, however that was not the case with you all. From the start I was made to be
quite comfortable and at ease. I could see the love of God in your smile and in your eyes.
Personally, I think God enables His children to witness to each others spirit even
before a relationship can be established; that was, indeed, the case with us. I thank God
for Brothers and Sisters in Christ such as you.
Father Scott had asked me to inform you all of some of the material needs
here at the Mission and I forgot to do so. We have learned that the computer training
facilities are inadequate for the amount of students we carry, and for the degree we must
teach. Therefore, a necessity for new computers has arisen. Should we be able to acquire a
couple of new Pentium class 486, or better, central processors, monitors, printers and
keyboards we could [immediately] begin intermediate and advanced classes. We feel that
computer literacy is on of the MAJOR keys in establishing good employment opportunity in
the future; thereby creating an avenue out of poverty for those God has given us to serve.
We will soon need skilled help in removing (from its present spot) and installing (at our
location) a walk-in refrigerator and a walk-in freezer. This will be a large undertaking I
am certain. Also, we need God called and faithful workers to work each weekend on our meal
delivery program. Of course we always need faithful partners to finance this work each
month. God will always supply and we must continue to grow so we will be able to accept
the added responsibilities, which the FATHER will place upon this work.
Allow me to take this opportunity to invite you to come visit anytime you
would like. I think you will become excited as you envision what GOD is doing here. Let me
challenge you to bring your wisdom and your talents and present them in service to our
Lord right here at Old Man Rivers MISSION on the SOUTH SIDE.
In HIS Service,
Old Man Rivers

Dear God,
My flashlight wont shine because the batteries ran down. Now I cant
see where Im going at night. I cant show my friends which Way to go either.
Dad says thats like my Jesus light. When I dont read Your Word, My
batteries run down. Then I cant see where You want me to go. And I cant
show others where they should go.
Please God, help me keep my Jesus light shining !!
