| Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
I confess that I am finding the current silence to be deafening. This week marks the
anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. Christians are being martyred almost daily in the
Sudan. And, now, Christians are engaged in "ethnic cleansing" in Kosovo, in the
former Yugoslavia.
While there has been some "world" outcry, the form it has taken, for the most
part, has been in meeting "violence with violence." Pardon my simplicity, but by
the time I had my credentials to play without supervision in a sandbox I had a firm grasp
of the fact that two wrongs do not make a right. Meeting violence with violence will not
be the answer.
What is breaking my heart the most is that I hear no clear and relentless voice from
the leaders of the great Christian traditions of this world saying, "This is wrong.
Stop it."
I know the nutshell history: a heavily Orthodox Christian people was victimized in many
ways by Muslims in centuries gone by. Get over it! We killed Gods Son, and God got
over it by making the cross the way of our salvation! Jesus is quite clear about
how we are to forgive more times than we can count. We are called, when struck on
one cheek, to turn and offer the other one. Words like revenge and retaliation are not in
the Christian theological dictionary; words like reconciliation and forgiveness are!
I am looking and listening
. I understand (sort of) if the Archbishop of
Canterbury and the Pope are hesitant to call another Christian leaders people to
task. But, I dont hear that they have made a trip or even a phone call to the
Ecumenical Patriarch (the Orthodox leader) to encourage him to speak out. The silence is
deafening. The silence is deadly.
What power does such a person as the Ecumenical Patriarch have? Worldly power and
authority are usually in the eye of the beholder. The Apostolic power Christ invested in
his Disciples seems significant to me. Jesus made it clear to his disciples that the sins
they loose on earth will be loosed in heaven, and that the sins they retain on earth are
retained in heaven. And, where is the consideration of excommunication? It seems more
reasonable here than in the case of a remarriage.
Am I haunted by the silence of Christendom in the years of the Holocaust? Yes, yes and
a thousand times yes! Did I ever believe that I would see such "ethnic killing"
again? I dont know, but I do know that I never believed it would be by Christian
hands. It is time to speak up with a call for self-accountability. Accountability to our
vow to God, and before everyone, to strive for justice and peace among all people and to
respect the dignity of every human being!
Faithfully,

A glorious Easter was celebrated at Trinity, and many,
many thanks need to be extended. Everyone who helped with brass polishing and the workday
the weekend of Palm Sunday, the altar guild members who set up for all the services during
Holy Week, as well as the taking down. Bishop Smith for his wonderful service on Maundy
Thursday. For everyone who participated in the Good Friday Ecumenical Stations of the
Cross. For our lectors, chalice bearers and acolytes who did such a great job at all our
Holy Week and Easter Services. To Linda Brantner and Carol Bennett for the beautiful
flowers that decorated the church for Easter Saturday and Sunday. To Pastoral Care and
others who delivered the flowers and hot cross buns to Trinitarians who couldnt be
with us on Easter Sunday. Thanks to Connie Waterman , Sandi Lawson and Lynn Randall for
providing Easter eggs for the children to hunt on Easter Sunday. To Betty Matthews and
Cathy Brookover for all your hard work and continued service.
Many thanks and congratulations go to Dr. Richard Wetzel, Arlene and the members
of the OU brass faculty and grad students who provided beautiful music on Easter morning.
Also to the choir for lending their beautiful voices to the service.
Last but certainly not least, to Father Hunter for his service to us and to our
community. Thank-you for your faith and the vision that you have for Trinity and the
people who make Trinity such a wonderful spiritual home and family, and for your
contributions to our community. The Ecumenical Stations of the Cross was a wonderful
success. For those who were unable to attend, it was a moving and powerful experience, one
sure to be repeated for years to come. !!! Many thanks again to all who contributed to a
glorious Easter.
Alleluia, the Lord is Risen

Women Raise the Roof Project
The Habitat for Humanity program, Women Raise the Roof (WRR), is
progressing according to schedule, building a home with Candy Schoonover, a single mother
with three sons. The excavation and footers are complete. The block foundation is nearly
finished and work on floor joists is ready to begin. Carol, Becky, Sandi, and Cara would
love to have more Trinity women join them at the work site. The fellowship is great, the
work is awesome, and the lunches are wonderful. There is a "hotline" at 424-4070
to check on the latest work schedule and needs. You dont need to have completed the
training courses in order to help.
There are lots of other ways for Trinity to support this ministry. Lunches are needed
every Friday and Saturday for 20 or more women. Consider responding to the Mothers' Day
Campaign with a gift in honor or memory of a special woman in your life. Call the Habitat
office at 422-7907 for more information. We are so proud of our efforts! Please drive by
the corner
of 17th and Covert Streets to see our progress. Also check out the Trinity website to see
pictures of the site and our progress.

| Connies Corner "Peterkin is a special place, a special
place to me. Peterkin is a special place, a special place to you. Here together we find
God's love..." so the song goes, written by the Rev. Kathleen Smith. Peterkin truly
is a special place full of opportunities for self-discovery. It gives young people a
chance to discover their own spirituality. Time at Peterkin gives young and old the
experience of being away from the outside influences that take our focus away from God.
Peterkin is a place of renewal. I hope everyone will consider spending time at Peterkin,
or sending a loved one there to experience a summer camp (see the printed schedule
elsewhere in the Times). This coming Sunday will give you a taste of what worship is like
at Peterkin. Please plan to join us at the 10:30 service.
Peace+ Connie |
Please hold these people, events and circumstances in your daily
prayers. Also, we encourage you to always say a prayer for those unknown persons who have
no one to pray for them. By-the-way, please remember to
renew prayer requests weekly.
