Starting next Wednesday, June 9th at 6 p.m., Trinity will start its monthly book study program entitled, "Wonderful Wednesdays." The book we will begin with is the first in the popular "Mitford" series, At Home in Mitford. The book is the first in a series of books about an Episcopal Church and priest in a small town in North Carolina. The book is available in most bookstores and has been sited at Sam’s.

The evening will include a light supper which will be provided by the church, clean-up will be minimal, and child-care will also be provided for those that need it. Following supper Father Hunter will lead a presentation and discussion on the book.

Our hope is that in looking at the lives and events in Mitford, we might make a few discoveries about our Church and ourselves in the process.

We plan to be done by about 7:45.

If you read this a while ago, read it again. If you haven’t read it, now is a great time to start.

See you on the 9th.

PS: Call by Monday, June 7th so we will know how much food to have!

Faith @ Fifth and Juliana

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

Recently, I snapped at someone who regularly and faithfully offers ministry to God through Trinity Church. I am by no means proud of this. What I am is very thankful that God provided an opportunity for the individual and me soon after to talk about it. Owning actions without excuse (and with regret) is not easy. The person whom I had "trespassed against" was honest in sharing the hurt and "grace-filled" in the reconciliation. I was offered a clean slate. Again in this event, I was blessed by grace.

How can it be that when something goes wrong, something of my own doing, I can experience grace? It certainly isn’t because of any notion that I am "devout" or "holy" or "deserving." My actions were anything but. Still, it happened. Now, how is that?

It is, in a word, "grace." The unearned, undeserved, un-required manifestation of God’s immeasurable love, poured out on all of us with such lavishness as to shame the great castles, resorts, mansions, museums, and theme parks of the world all rolled into one. Such grace is often times handed to us by one in human form.

In a lesson from this Sunday past, Paul makes it clear that Jesus is in each of us (2 Corinthians 13). I believe that! I believe most people in the pews believe, or want to believe, it. I also know that I (and others?) fail to treat people, those I love and those with whom I have only the smallest passing contact, as if they were Christ.

In this time during the Church year when we have just celebrated the fullness of God (Trinity Sunday), it seems like a right time to seize upon that fullness to do two things. First to help us heal some hurts. As difficult as it may sound (and it is difficult), God finds ways to take us through tough things like this and to emerge from the other side with a sense of having been blessed.

Second, times like this always point to the opportunity to bring change in ourselves — with God’s help, of course. I was so troubled by my actions that I talked with a trusted spiritual friend about it. His question to me made me face deep changes I needed to make in myself. His question was, "Was it deserved or was it stress?" The answer to the second part of the question was "yes." The answer to the first part doesn’t matter — either way, there is nothing constructive, spiritual or Christ-like in snapping at someone. Do I allow how I handle stress to dictate the behavior I manifest with others? Or do I work on the cause of the stress (yuck – much harder) and my management of the same, again with God’s help?

The answer seems pretty clear to me. I’m sure it does to you, too.

Faithfully,

Scott Hunter+

A Prayer for us all? May God, our God , who is faithful and just, lead and guide me, through grace to mend relationships and change ways deep within myself through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear Friend,

As you got up this morning, I watched you and hoped you would talk to me. Even if it were just a few words, asking my opinion or thanking me for something good that happened in your life yesterday, but I noticed you were too busy trying to find the right outfit to put on and wear to work. I waited again. When you ran around the house getting ready I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but you were too busy. At one point you had to wait fifteen minutes with nothing to do except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring to your feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me but you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip. I watched as you went to work and I waited patiently all day long. With all your activities, I guess you were too busy to say anything to me. I noticed that before lunch you looked around. Maybe you felt embarrassed to talk to me, that is why you didn't bow your head. You glanced three or four tables over and you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn't. That's okay. There is still more time left, and I have hope that you will talk to me even yet. You went home and it seems as if you had lots of things to do. After a few of them were done you turned on the TV. I don't know if I like TV or not, just about anything goes there & you spend a lot of time each day in front of it - not thinking about anything - just enjoying the show. I waited patiently again as you watched TV and ate your meal, but again, you didn't talk to me. As you did your paper work I waited again. You did what you had to do. At bedtime I guess you felt too tired. After you said goodnight to your family you plopped into bed and fell asleep in no time. That's okay because you may not realize that I am always there for you. I've got patience more than you will ever know. I even want to teach you how to be patient with others as well. Because I love you so much, a long time ago I left a wonderful place called Heaven and came to Earth. I gave it up so that I could be ridiculed and made fun of. And I even died so you wouldn't have to take my place. I love you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayers or thought or a thankful part of your heart. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation. Well, you are getting up again and once again I will wait with nothing but love for you, hoping that today you will give me some time. Have a nice day!

Your friend,

Jesus

wpe4B.jpg (2841 bytes)Summer School for Outreach

This summer join us for a look at how scripture and action work together to accomplish the mission of Christ's church in the world. We will hear about the work of Old Man Rivers, the Red Cross, the Good Samaritan Clinic, Habitat for Humanity, Trinity's ministry of Hospitality, and our call to be part of GEM, a wonderful ministry of mission to the world beyond our borders. For two Sundays each in June, July, and August, we will gather at 9:00 am for scripture direction, to hear how our church is taking part in these ministries and to prepare a special gift for these programs. On June 20 children and adults are invited to learn about the Ministry of Hospitality. Scripture which directs us will be discussed, we will learn about how Trinity participates in this ministry and we will bake muffins to offer our fathers and those who love them.

On June 27 all are invited to learn about the ministry of Habitat for Humanity. Come and learn about scripture, listen to a Habitat Homeowner's story and help prepare food for Habitat workers. Summer School for Outreach will continue on July 18 and 25 and August 15 and 22. Stay tuned for more information!

wpe4C.jpg (2943 bytes)Have You Seen the House?

Trinity's women volunteers to the Women Raise the Roof project of Habitat for Humanity hope you have been driving by the Candy Schoonover home located at the corner of 17th and Covert Streets. The roof is on, the doors and windows have been installed and the white siding is on. Did you know that this home is being constructed on land given by the Gerwig Family Trust? That St. Anne's Guild is providing the floor coverings? That Judith and Julie Rathbone donated and delivered the plumbing supplies? To see the women builders in action, choose Tuesday or Thursday evenings between 5-8 pm or Friday and Saturdays between 8 am and 5 pm. Take Market Street to 17th Street. Turn east on 17th and go three blocks to the corner of Covert Street. You can't miss the big pink sign and the large orange supplies trailer (thanks Craig Curry!).

Presiding Bishop’s Fund: It was reported in the June issue of LOGOS (the Bishop’s Newsletter) that the Diocese of West Virginia has sent contributions to the Presiding Bishop’s Fund Designated for as follows: Assistance to Kosovo refugees, assistance to Honduras hurricane relief and assistance to Oklahoma tornado relief. The total amount sent for the above relief efforts was in excess of $10,000. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of members of the congregations of our Diocese. Offerings collected at the Diocesan Convention were included in the contributions .

Deanery Meets, Elects Representatives

The Ohio Valley Deanery meet on Sunday, May 30th at Grace Church, St. Mary’s, WV. (What great hospitality they provide us!) The purpose of the meeting was to elect 2 clergy and 2 lay representatives to be placed by the Standing Committee of either the Episcopal Search Committee or the Committee on the Transition of the Episcopate. Elected were: Mr. Jerry Edward Shaw (Good Shepherd) and Mr. Hampden V. Fitcher (Trinity) as lay representatives. The Rev’d Jack Neilson (Ohio Valley Cluster) and the Rev’d Scott Hunter (Trinity).

When committee assignments are actually made, we will let you know.

Many thanks to all who offered themselves to serve — especially Betty Rodda from Trinity.

Many thanks go out to our choir for providing us with their beautiful voices and wpe4D.jpg (2392 bytes)music throughout the last year. Last Sunday was the last Sunday for the choir to sing as a group until this fall. Although many choir members were out of town last weekend and the choir was small in number, they were still strong of voice and a solo by Laverne Marshall was enjoyed during Offertory . Many thanks also to choir master and organist Arlene Wetzel for her continued contributions to our music program.
