Faith @ Fifth and Juliana

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

I am writing you while at Peterkin Camp and Conference Center where I am serving as the Director of Senior Camp 1999. We are late in the week, and while it is not currently late at night by the sun, my body is saying it is sometime past midnight — it must be because it needs more sleep. I have been blessed with a good faculty (thanks in no small part to Connie Waterman) and a good set of counselors. We have a camp of about 110, over ninety of which are campers.

While I have led many youth mission trips and served on many camp staffs in the past, including staff for Boys and Girls Camp at Peterkin last year, this is my first year of involvement with Peterkin Senior Camp. This involvement has revealed several exciting things.

First, one of my faculty members has been Sister Barbara Jean, SHN. She is a nun of the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity, and one of the two nuns who will be taking up residence at Sandscrest beginning in December of this year. She will be a real treasure and delight to the diocese. Her interaction with the young people and with others has been rich and full and filled with genuineness and the Holy Spirit. I am already pleading with her to be a part, a big part, of our Lent at Trinity this coming year. We will all be blessed by the sisters’ presence in our midst.

Second, I have had another lesson in the dynamics of change. I am not sure just what it is about the Church, and maybe in particular the Episcopal Church (though I don’t believe we have a monopoly) which makes change such a challenge, but it is!

Senior Camp at Peterkin is flooded with “traditions.” Some are articulated; others, many others, are assumed. As a new director, I have worked to hold onto the central core of the traditions, while at the same time adding that which the Holy Spirit has guided me, and the faculty, to add. The reaction has been surprising. In ways which I never suspected, the resistance has been greater than any of the “prayer book” forces of some twenty-plus years ago.

What does this mean for Peterkin, the Church, our parish or you and me? Well, most of all, I hope it means God has a sense of humor … after all, the stuff to which we are clinging is transitional at best. The only thing permanent under the sun, is the Son (the Father and the Holy Spirit)! Second, it does not matter the age — change challenges us. It challenges us even when it is necessary, healthy, and even blessed. Last, at least for now, it reminds me that God expects change … if not we would still be living under the Law and not under Grace … if not, each of us and each of our communities of faith would be museums. God calls us to be active, alive and willing to embrace the Holy Spirit in whatever way it calls us.

See you soon

Faithfully,

Scott +

wpe49.jpg (2204 bytes)Supper Club: Supper Club at the Neilsons’ home was great! A lovely summer evening, delicious food by Trinity cooks, and the warm hospitality of Lynette and Jack made for a perfect time !! This is the last Supper Club event for the season. Our Fall fun will begin in September at Tina and Scott Hunter’s home, date to be announced. Plan now to be a regular part of this popular Trinity event. We meet every month for supper and conversation, no agenda and we’re all invited !!

Many thanks to Father Jim Wilkinson for presiding at services on Sunday June 20th in Father Hunter’s absence. Fr. Wilkinson is the Chaplain and Coordinator for the Ministry on the River of New York and New Jersey. He serves as chaplain to mariners and to the towboat industry, and he regularly visits towboat crews on the river where they work, as well as visiting churches along the Ohio and Upper Mississippi Rivers to help get the word out about this unique ministry. Trinity is hoping to help the Ministry on the River by becoming a remote office and a “River Friendly Church.”

Traveling this summer: Why not plan to prepay your financial support to Trinity Church. Even when you are gone our bill-bearing mail continues to find us. Your consideration would be appreciated by all: ESPECIALLY THE TREASURER !!!!!

Altar Guild Memorial for Laurel Pleninger:  A Memorial gift to the Altar Guild is being planned to be given in the name of former Altar Guild Directress Laurel Pleninger. If you would like to be a part of this memorial to Laurel, please give or send your check to the Church marked “Altar Guild Memorial for Laurel Pleninger.” New altar linens and possibly a credence table for the new chapel are among the items being considered.

Cans Needed: The Altar Guild is asking anyone who can to bring in their old tall juice cans or the smaller coffee cans. They are needed to place the altar flowers in following church services so that the flowers can be delivered to fellow parishioners.

Men and Women’s Weekend Retreat: Sign-up sheets are now on the Bulletin Board in Trinity Hall. Scholarships are available.

Missing Tray: Betsy Smith is missing a battered but beloved green tin tray with rosy flowers painted on it. It might have last been seen at the ‘98 Book Sale or at a Supper Club event. If anyone knows its whereabouts or finds it, please give to Betty Matthews in the church office for safekeeping until it can be retrieved by its owner. Thank-you!

For young people and those who love them

On June 7, 1776, Delegate Richard Henry Lee of Virginia announced independence from England, stating that the colonies were free and independent states, absolved of all allegiance, or loyalty, to the British crown.

The Second Continental Congress wanted to write a declaration of independence to notify foreign countries so that the Congress could officially negotiate with foreign governments, contract alliances, and receive aid.

The five man committee appointed to write a declaration of independence included Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Robert Livingston of New York, and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia.

On July 4, 1776, John Hancock, who was the President of the Second Continental Congress, became the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. His signature is also the largest. ( If my history is correct I believe it was done as an act of defiance to the British. Let me know if I was right !! Betsy)
