Bishop’s Visitation

This Sunday, Bishop Smith will be at Trinity to celebrate four confirmations and one reception at the 10:30 a.m. service. Bishop Smith will also be preaching at the 8 a.m. service and at 9:15 a.m. he will be spending time with our young people as we resume Sunday School classes for the new church school year. This Sunday will also mark Bishop Smith’s last official visit to

Trinity as Bishop of the Diocese of West Virginia as he has announced his retirement effective this coming November 1st. Bishop Smith has served the Diocese as Bishop for the last 10 years. He and his wife, Victoria, are building a home in Shepherdstown and will take up residency there in early November. (Maybe he can keep an eye of Fr. Schramm while he is out there?).

Come celebrate this special service with us as we welcome the new Confirmands and honor Bishop Smith. It will also be the first Sunday back for our choir and the first day of Sunday School. Following the service there will be a reception for the Confirmands and the Bishop. The Vestry will meet with Bishop Smith following the reception at 12:30.

Faith @ Fifth and Juliana

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

This coming Sunday we, at Trinity, will have our last "official" visitation from Bishop John Smith. As the energetic sixth Bishop of West Virginia he has served Christ and the Church as the apostolic presence in this diocese and as the spiritual leader of our community of faith. As he approaches his retirement (officially November 1) he leaves the leadership role of diocesan bishop with the Diocese of West Virginia in the most solid and healthy financial position it has seen. Crisscrossing the state for a decade, he leaves a rebuilding and strong Peterkin ministry, especially the summer youth camping program. And, the pioneering work undertaken in this diocese in the area of "cluster ministry" has empowered ministry and people in places where otherwise congregations would have ceased to function. And, it has lit a shining light for other parts of the church to see.

I encourage you to plan to be at one of the services this coming Sunday. As a church whose very name signifies the importance of bishops (Episcopal is the English form of the Greek word meaning "bishop" or "overseer") it is a special day anytime the Bishop is with us, but this one is especially important.

While here, Bishop Smith will administer the sacramental rite of Confirmation to (as of now) four individuals : Jim Christian, Michelle Goody, Kelly Matthews, and Shawn Sandy. He will also receive into our Communion, Christine Christian. This adult profession of faith and claiming of one’s own Baptism Covenant and place in the community, along with a formal welcome to one who now joins with us is important to our life together — it signifies the vitality of the Holy Spirit’s presence with us.

It is also a time for each of us to reflect on our Baptismal Covenant, asking the hard questions of ourselves about what we are doing to live this covenant to the fullest — and taking action to do it! It is a time of renewal for us all.

Come this Sunday. Celebrate. Be renewed.

Faithfully,

Scott Hunter+

Saturday Sept. 11th from 9 a.m. until 12 noon we will be having a Work Day at Trinity. Lots of minor repairs need done and one fairly big project will be undertaken. The dividing wall between two Sunday school rooms on the second floor of the Christian Ed. Building will be removed. Although the job should not be complicated (I did say should not), it will probably be fairly messy. The extra space will be needed for use during the Godly Play Sunday School sessions. So please make plans to come and lend a hand on Saturday morning. If you would like more information please contact Building and Grounds Chairperson Jennifer Currey at 422-8331.

Episcopal Habitat Project: Sunday marked the launch of the Episcopal Habitat project with a service and pig roast at the City Park Pavilion. Sept. 18th at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church the Ecumenical Habitation Service will be held. All are welcome to attend.

Also T-shirts will be available with the Episcopal Habitat Project logo on the front. The shirts are available in red, white or blue and in sizes from small – 3XL and are 100% cotton. The prices of the shirts is $12.50 each — all proceeds going to the Habitat project! Get yours now. Call the office or order on Sunday.

Diocesan Ordination at Peterkin: This week will be the Clergy Overnight at Peterkin with Ordination on Thursday at 11 a.m. Michael Hadaway will be ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church. A visit to Trinity from Michael Hadaway is being planned for the near future. Please pray for him on Thursday. And, stay tuned for more details regarding Michael.

The land on which the house was built was donated by the Helen Gerwig family. The house will be open and there will be prayers and singing offered and Candy Schoonover and her family will be provided with a Bible and keys to the home. Women are still needed for final touch-ups such as painting and installation of fixtures. The Good Samaritan Clinic is in need of volunteers to help provide a sandwich supper once a month to the workers at the clinic. Two people are usually asked to sign up for each month, one to provide sandwiches and the other to provide dessert. The sign up sheet is on the Bulletin Board in Trinity Hall and Carol Olson will send volunteers reminders prior to the dates they have signed up for. Food is needed for approximately 12 to 15 people and Trinity usually provides the dinners for the second Thursday of each month. Someone is needed to provide dessert for the 16th of Sept. and for sandwiches in October and November. Please sign up if you can !!!

Wonderful Wednesdays will resume in October. The book we will use is, The Early Church, by Henry Chadwick. It is available in paperback. You can get it locally or order it via the Internet.

"I want to tithe," a man told his rector. "When my income was $50 a week, I gave $5 to the church every Sunday. When I was successful in business and my income rose to $500 a week, I gave $50 to my church every Sunday. But now my income is $5,000 a week, and I just can’t bring myself to give $500 to the church every week."

The rector said, "Why don’t we pray over this?" The rector began to pray, "Dear God, please make this man’s income be $500 a week so that he can tithe."

"Godly Play!"

We are about to begin a wonderful new program called Godly Play. It is a Montessori type setting for kids 3 and up. The youngest kids of the parish have been practicing" using the new space. There is sure to be an adjustment period, but I am encouraged by the number of people who have come forward to volunteer as aunts, uncles, and storytellers. I hope that some of the older kids will want to switch roles from time to time to be storytellers instead of listeners. The high school aged kids are encouraged to participate as well.
For those of you who have already volunteered, I will be in touch to let you know where you are needed. You can let me know then what Sundays you are available. For others that are still considering volunteering, don't hesitate. The more the merrier( and the less time consuming for everyone). This coming Sunday will kick off the year with a visit from the Bishop- so bring the kiddies at 9:15 to spend some time with him.

Thanks!
Connie+

"Godly Play !" orientation programs for parents and children continue to be held on Wednesday evenings. Dinner is provided at 5:45 p.m. and the orientation program begins at 6:30. For young people and those who love them

A dream is a seed
The seed of a tree
A tree full of life
And the things you can be
Your dreams are the windows
Through which you can see
A hint of your future
And the things you will be
Each night when you sleep
You’re feeding the seed
The seed of the tree
Of who you will be.
