Faith @
Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
In about a week you will be receiving in the mail
a packet containing several things: a letter, the anticipated expenses
of Trinity for the year 2000, and a card on which you are invited to
indicate your financial support for this work. It is my hope, and the
hope of many at Trinity that you will prayerfully consider your
support and respond with the generosity which befits someone saying
"thank you" for life and for salvation.
Consider this however: What if I told you that
Trinity has just received a 10 million dollar gift (IT HAS NOT). How
would that impact your response? There are three ways as I look at it:
1) you would increase your giving having been motivated by the
generosity of others (yes, I am a hopeful person); 2) this 10 million
gift would have no impact on your giving; or 3) you would throw the
packet in the trash because Trinity wouldn’t need any more.
In the spirit of Romans 12 the first option is
not a particularly poor choice — we are to attempt to outdo one
another and be ardent in spirit in many ways. It would be wonderful if
we saw every good and generous work by others as a healthy effort to
raise the bar to a new standard. That having been said, I believe that
Jesus asks, not for equal gifts but for equal sacrifice — the widow’s
mite is as high as the bar can get.
Choice number 3 is the one which history tells us
will most likely happen. It is a sad thing too, because it indicates
that our giving is based somewhere other than in response to love and
grace and forgiveness and blessedness we receive from the God who is
with us in and through all things.
But behind choice (or is that door) #2, there can
be spiritual health beyond imagining. I believe that the news of a
large gift to the church should be a time of rejoicing, but it should
have little impact on our decisions about what we do with our gift of
money, or time, or talents. Simply put — only we can write our
"thank you note" to God for all that we receive everyday in
every way.
Maybe you think I’m nuts (get in line), but I
really believe that what we give is based on two things: our gratitude
to God for the very breath we take and the accomplishing of the work
the Holy Spirit calls us to.
Begin to pray now. Look at the abundance of
blessing before you. Respond in love.
Faithfully,
Scott Hunter+

  Christ's
Great Commission was to "go into all the world and preach the Gospel
to all creation."
Last Saturday and Sunday we
enjoyed a very educational and uplifting visit from ROW Trustee Mark
Thurman. Mark works for and travels with Rivers of the World (ROW) an
international exploration and development agency that works on very remote
rivers. ROW just led an expedition to the Nanay and Napo Rivers of Peru
where his team preached the Gospel, experimented with entomopathogenic
bacteria used to kill the larvae of black flies and mosquitoes, and
provided relief food for 250 families.
Mr. Thurman stated that ROW needs many things from people to help
support their work, but requested above all that our prayers are needed as
much as financial support or donations of goods. There are many
opportunities to help ROW. One is that they will be leading and expedition
back to Peru and need donations of funds, school supplies for the
children, and volunteers to go into Peru. If anyone is interested in
contributing to ROW or going on a real mission trip to Peru please
contact Eric Lawson. The dates for the trip next year are June 17th-24th,
20000. You can also visit the ROW website at http://www.row.org
for more information on this organization and the work they are doing
around the world.

ECW
Fall Luncheon The ECW Fall
Luncheon was held this past Monday, Oct. 11th. A light lunch was followed
by a presentation of watercolor painting by local artist and fellow
Trinitarian Lee Fritch. Lee displayed many of his paintings that he had
recently completed during his trip to Colorado and Eastern Utah in
September and demonstrated techniques used with watercolors and even gave
away a few "tricks of the trade." It was a great way to spend
and afternoon!

Opportunity
for Holy Baptism :
Sunday November 7th is All Saints Sunday and will also be the next
opportunity for anyone to receive Holy Baptism. If anyone is interested
please contact Father Hunter at the church office (422-3363) as soon as
possible.

All Saints Day: On
All Saints Day, Monday November 1st there will be a service in the Adam’s
Chapel beginning at 5:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend !!!!!

NEEDED:
Anyone interested in occasional work in the nursery. I am desperately
short of personnel to call if one of our nursery attendees must be
out. I need anyone from 15 yrs on up. If I need an extra hand, I
will call the younger ones. I won't ask anyone under 18 to serve by
themselves. Please call me at home, or leave a message at the
church.
Thanks! Connie

Work Day:
Goals for the Oct. 23rd workday are: renovate the youth recreation room
located in Trinity House. It will require moving furniture; cleaning the
floor, windows, and furniture; painting the walls, repairing the door and
latch, checking out the heating situation, and changing light bulbs.
There are also other projects that we have the supplies for: painting the
vestibules, sealing the parking lot and painting the lines, repairing
various door stops, or repairing broken kneelers. If any of these projects
have your name on them stop by Sat Oct. 23rd., we start at 9 am and quit
around 12:00 noon. By the way bring tools. See you there! Thanks for your
participation!

Trinity Water Station:
Many thanks for all the people who helped with the water station at
Trinity during last Sunday’s Crop Walk. Helpers included Hampden and
Susie Fitcher, Father Hunter, Mark Thurman (from ROW), Paul and Jacob
Miller, and Jackie and Chelsea Nicholson.

Attention Vestry:
The next Vestry meeting has been moved to this coming Sunday,
October 17th and is to be held immediately following the 10:30 am service.

St. Cecilia:
On Sunday, October 10th
the second St. Cecilia event was held featuring the Keyboard faculty of
Ohio University. Many thanks to Arlene Wetzel as well as the members of
the Keyboard faculty for their continued commitment to making our St.
Cecilia events a success. The event even made the local TV news on Sunday
evening and Monday morning. If you haven’t been to an event, mark your
calendars for Sunday November 21st at 7:00 P.M. which is the date of the
next St. Cecilia Event and will feature Linda Leyrer, coloratura soprano,
accompanied by pianist Jeffrey Peterson. Mr. Peterson is also a
Parkersburg native.!!!
| A
few thoughts:
Funny how a $100 "looks" so big when you take it to
church, but so small when you take it to the mall.
Funny how long it takes to serve God for an hour, but how quickly
a team plays 60 minutes of basketball.
Funny how long a couple of hours spent at church are, but how
short they are when watching a movie.
Funny how we can't think of anything to say when we pray, but
don't have difficulty thinking of things to talk about to a friend.
Funny how we get thrilled when a baseball game goes into extra
innings, but we complain when a sermon is longer than the regular
time.
Funny how hard it is to read a chapter in the bible, but how easy
it is to read 100 pages of a best selling novel.
Funny how people want to get a front seat at any game or concert,
but scramble to get a back seat at church services.
Funny how we need 2 or 3 weeks advance notice to fit a church
event into our schedule, but can adjust our schedule for other
events at the last moment.
Funny how hard it is for people to learn a simple gospel well
enough to tell others, but how simple it is for the same people to
understand and repeat gossip.
Funny how we believe what the newspaper say, but question what
the Bible says.
Funny how everyone wants to go to heaven provided they do not
have to believe, or to think, or to say, or do anything.
Funny how you can send a thousand 'jokes' through e-mail and they
spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding
the Lord, people think twice about sharing. FUNNY, ISN'T IT ?
Are you laughing?
Are you thinking?
Spread the Word and give thanks to the Lord for He is good! |

Connies
Corner
Things
are moving along. We are looking for some feedback so far in the
church school year. We want to "tweek" the program and
make sure it is meeting most of the needs at Trinity. We have had
many people participating who haven't for awhile, or maybe not at
all. I am glad of that. For those of you who gave me your name and
haven't heard from me yet, don't think that I have forgotten you! I
need everyone that signed up, so I WILL be calling. I am attempting
to have everyone serve once before asking anyone to repeat. I would
also like to reach a point that I can attend church myself from time
to time. Every new program takes some time to settle in.
Parents, keep an eye out for an
up-coming meeting. Father Hunter and I will be getting together and
then we will probably want to meet with you to determine how things
are going in your perspective and may have some slight changes to
propose. Please let us know what you think, because this program is
for you and your children.
Thanks, Connie |

Please hold these people, events and circumstances in your daily prayers.
Also, we encourage you to always say a prayer for those unknown persons who
have no one to pray for them. By-the-way, please remember to renew prayer
requests weekly.
