Greet The Rev’d Michael Hadaway

(our future Priest Intern)

This weekend we are indeed fortunate to have with us at Trinity, the Reverend Michael Hadaway. He will be serving at Trinity in the Diocesan Priest Intern program beginning July 2000. As you may remember he was ordained a Deacon in September of this year (during his senior year at Virginia Theological Seminary) as is the custom of this diocese. He will be ordained a Priest in June at Trinity, Huntington.

The soon-to-be Father Hadaway will be joined on this visit by his fiancée, Leigh Palmer. She is a student at VTS also and will complete her Masters of Theological Studies this spring. She has recently served a Wallace Stegner graduate fellowship in poetry at Stanford University. By-the-way, the couple plan to be married just after graduation and just before ordination and coming to Trinity.

For all kinds of reasons, please plan to be at Trinity this Sunday; especially to meet and welcome Michael and Leigh.

Faith @ Fifth and Juliana

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

In these present times things like "institutional loyalty" have faded like cheap watercolors on a rainy day. Study after study tells us that there is no such thing as denominational loyalty anymore either. No longer do people go to a particular church just because their parents did. No longer are people "Episcopalians" (or any other religious tradition) because their family has been __________ (whatever) for two, three, or ten generations.

In many ways this is sad. In another way, this calls us out of complacency to meet the challenge of offering our faith — Christianity — in a way that is meaningful, relevant, and life-fulfilling to people living in the here and now. It is no small challenge, indeed.

Commitment and challenge do not motivate people of this day and age to respond — with either time, talent or monetary resources. Compassion and community draw people in a present time when job security is as fleeting as a morning mist; when those who love us and whom we love most are no longer in the same state, much less the same neighborhood or town.

Accept this invitation to hear about the compassion and community of Trinity Church. This Sunday, and for the next two Sundays following, we will offer to you: Trinity Church: In My Life, In My Heart, In My Dreams. Three different looks at the compassion and community of Trinity from three very diverse perspectives. It is sure to be a powerful time; a time you won’t want to miss. I look forward to seeing you there.

Blessings & peace,

Scott Hunter+

NOTICE:

A rural Episcopal Church in Hinton, WV needs children's books for their "Free books for kids" program.  It is truly a divine outreach program.  I am sending the left over children's book sale books, which only consists of about 3 boxes full.    Father Herb Ellison told me he gave out around 300 books at a school this morning.  These books are not going into a school library, they are going home with the kids.  It brings tears...  Any way, please send them your kid's books.

Aim at Heaven

If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. The apostles themselves, who set out on foot to convert the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English evangelicals who abolished the slave trade, all left their mark on earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this one. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth "thrown in." Aim at earth and you will get neither. —– C.S. Lewis

Jesus Wants to Know

If you never felt pain, then how would you know that I AM a Healer? If you never went through anything, how would you know that I AM a Deliverer? If you never had a trial, how could you call yourself an Overcomer? If you never felt sadness, how would you know that I AM a Comforter? If you never made a mistake, how would you know that I AM Forgiving? If you knew all, how would you know that I WILL answer your questions? If you never were in trouble, how would you know that I WILL come to your rescue? If you never were broken, then how would you know that I CAN make you whole? If you never had a problem, how would you know that I CAN solve them? If you never had any suffering, then how would you know what I went through? If you never went through the fire, how would you become pure? If I gave you all things, how would you appreciate them? If I never corrected you, how would you know that I LOVE you? If you had all power, then how would you learn to depend on Me? If your life was perfect, then what would you need Me for?

Peace, Connie

BOOK

Oh, look, it’s a book!
I’m sure it must be
A path of adventures waiting for me,
A yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz,
A frivolous poem without any cause.
Should I open it and peek to see what’s inside?
What if it’s scary I might need to hide.
I’ll never know unless I dare.
I need a good laugh, a cry or a scare.
I’m sure it can wait - well, then I’ll never know
Maybe it’s some place that I’ll never go.
But today is the day that’s been waiting for me
I’ll open this book, and I will see.
