Faith @
Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
This coming Sunday brings with it many things …
the chance to worship God and give thanks for the countless blessings
in our lives … the chance to be fed with holy food and to anticipate
the coming of the Christ … the opportunity to hear the crystal sound
of young voices in “music of the season” … the chance to worship
in the centuries old form of Lessons & Carols (a gift given by the
Anglican Church to the world) … and it is the Sunday of our Parish
Annual Meeting.
It will be a time to celebrate. Beth West, Bill
Mildren, Jr., Diane Hensley, and Shirley Lawrence-Berrey have served
faithfully as members of the Vestry and it is time to show our
appreciation. It is time to call forth new leaders into the ministry
of the Vestry, to be Parish Delegates to the Deanery and Convention,
and to elect a Trustee. We will hear from the Stewardship Committee on
the status of our financial giving. It will be time to look back, for
a brief moment, and to look forward with the longing eyes of Advent to
see what “The Dayspring from on High” has in store for us.
It is God’s church, always has been, I pray it
always will be. But, it is given into your hands by God for a time,
just as children are only given to us by God for a time, to guide, to
pray for and about, to nurture, and make strong in faith, in body, and
spirit. Your presence, participation and prayers at this time are part
of the responsibility which comes when each of us says, “I believe”
at our baptism and each time we renew that covenant.
I am sure you will be there, so I want tell you
now how much I am looking forward to seeing you on Sunday — of
course at worship, certainly at the Annual Meeting, and probably at
one or both of the musical offerings.
Blessings & peace,
PS PLEASE GIVE BLOOD ON WEDNESDAY AT THE BLOOD
DRIVE!

A Holiday Shopping List —
- Never pass a Salvation Army Kettle without putting money in it.
- Always leave the close parking space for someone who can’t walk so
well.
- Say “thank you” to all the clerks you deal with … you’ll be
surprised at how much nicer they will suddenly become.
- For every hour of shopping, spend ten minutes talking with a child
about the real “reason for the season.”
- Go caroling anywhere, but a nursing home, care facility or hospital is
especially nice.
- Give a gift to your
alma mater.
For every toy you give someone you know, give one to someone you don’t.
Invite a friend to Midnight Mass — it is free and the best show in
town.
Call an old friend and tell them what a gift they are to you.
Make a gift to the Discretionary Fund at your church — they quietly do
a lot of good.

‘Tis the Season . . .
Each year Parkersburg's Episcopal churches work together to offer special
help to 80 or more families in need at Christmas time. The Christmas Store,
where these families can select gifts and warm clothing, will open at Good
Shepherd Church on December 15.
Each year Trinity Church prepares a Personal Care Packet for each family
at the Christmas Store. The packets contain items that cannot be purchased
with Food Stamps. Supplies for the packets will be collected in baskets
decorated with red ribbons in the Nave and in Trinity Hall.
Will you begin this week to bring these full-sized personal
care items to Trinity?
(The last day to bring these items is December 8th !!!)
Soap
Deodorant
Shampoo
Combs and brushes
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
P.S. For the Christmas project we use full-sized
containers, but hotel-sized products are needed by Old Man Rivers Mission.
If you bring these, we will deliver them to the Mission.

Corner
You may have noticed the young
people coming in earlier to the 10:30 service the last couple of
weeks. We are exploring the idea of shortening the time period of
Godly Play to just one hour. So far it seems to be working well.
Many of the older kids leave at that time to acolyte anyway. The
younger ones have a hard time sitting still for much longer as well.
This way, the adult volunteers can attend the 10:30 service as well.
Any and all feedback is welcome. I am still and ALWAYS looking for
more helpers- Aunts, Uncles, and Storytellers.
Many thanks to all of you who have
helped and continue to do so. I would like to get a schedule
together, so please let me know what days in Dec. and Jan. that you
CANNOT help. I have talked with some of you already. If you find it
on your mind, you can always leave me a message at my home or the
church. THANK YOU!
**IMPORTANT** I have
not yet found anyone to help this coming Sunday. I will be out of
town playing with the Ohio Valley Symphony. Please help. You will
find it a blessing.
Peace,Connie

Advent Is…
The first season of the
church year and is a time of preparation for our celebration of the
birth of our Lord in Bethlehem. The symbolism of the Advent wreath is
rich. It is a
circle to remind us that God has no beginning and no end. God always has
lived and always will live. Evergreens are used on the wreath to remind
us that people who love God will live forever with God. The wreath has
four candles — usually 3 blue or purple and one pink or rose. The four
candles stand for the four weeks in Advent. A fifth candle (white) or
Christ candle is added to the center of the wreath and lit on Christmas
Eve. The candles we use in the Advent wreath are to remind us of the way
Jesus changes the darkness of hatred and evil into the light of joy and
love.
This Advent season, remember to light your Advent candles each day as
we wait to celebrate the coming of our Savior in Bethlehem !!
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach
repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed
their warnings and forsake our sins that we may greet with joy the
coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
