Sunday, December 5th, Trinity held its Annual Parish Meeting and elected new members to the Vestry, Convention Delegates and Alternates and a new Trustee.

Paula Sellers, Scott Ramsey, Forbes Hiehle and Betsy Curry were elected to the Vestry by acclimation. Eric Lawson, Hamp Fitcher and Carol Adams were elected as our Convention Delegates, and Susie Fitcher, Betty Rodda and James Wright were elected as Alternates. Doug Adams was re-elected to serve another term as a Trustee.

Heartfelt thanks by Father Hunter were given to outgoing Vestry members Shirley Lawrence-Berrey, Beth West, Bill Mildren, Jr., and Diane Hensley, and each was also presented with a live poinsettia.

Several reports given of note included a report from Doug Adams stating that the church is financially operating “in the black” and within budget. The Stewardship Committee is still looking for at least 24 pledges from people pledging last year (but we haven’t seen 2000’s yet). Anyone who has not turned in their pledge for the year 2000 please do so as soon as possible. This information is needed to finalize the budget for 2000. Reports were also heard from the Outreach and from Evangelism Committees.

There was a time for questions from the assembled group, and then the meeting was closed with a time of thanksgiving prayers and singing the Doxology (along with singing of Happy Birthday for Dick Mason and Hamp Fitcher).

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear can hear him coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

Maybe you recognize the above words. They are the words of the third stanza of the hymn we know as “O little town of Bethlehem.” They are words which bore to the heart of Advent for me. We all, and I do mean all, get caught up in some form or fashion in the busyness and noise and frantic pace of what are supposed to be holidays. These words speak to me clearly about the truth of Jesus’ coming into our hearts.

Holidays, is an English contraction of Holy Days. Holy. It means set apart. There is nothing set apart, nothing special, about frantic and noisy and busy. These are characteristic of the everyday. They do not serve to set this time apart as any sort of holiday or Holy Day.

Further, the closer we move to the great Holy Day of Christmas, the more frantic, etc., things become — that is, if things progress as usual. In the midst, we find a strange mix of humanity at its best and, sadly, at its worst: the “worst” being easy to spot. Increases in crime. People in fist-fights over toys in a store. Others needing to visit food pantries because they have succumbed to the hype and pressure of spending too much to give the costly trinket.

It is not pretty. It is not Holy. But, it can be! Making it so is not really that difficult. Here are a few ideas.

For 10 minutes each day turn off the TV, turn off the lights, light the tree and put on music of the season. Gather your household, sit close together and gaze at the beauty.

Avoid the gift giving craze (especially the kid craze). Jesus received three gifts. If that was appropriate for our Lord, it is certainly appropriate for us.

Give the gift of yourself — you can not buy that anywhere and neither can those who love you. Spend time with someone you care about.

And you will find that the “dear Christ enters in.”

Blessings & peace,

Scott Hunter+

A Holiday Shopping List —

  1. Never pass a Salvation Army Kettle without putting money in it.
  2. Always leave the close parking space for someone who can’t walk so well.
  3. Say “thank you” to all the clerks you deal with … you’ll be surprised at how much nicer they will suddenly become.
  4. For every hour of shopping, spend ten minutes talking with a child about the real “reason for the season.”
  5. Go caroling anywhere, but a nursing home, care facility or hospital is especially nice.
  6. Give a gift to your alma mater.
  7. For every toy you give someone you know, give one to someone you don’t.
  8. Invite a friend to Midnight Mass — it is free and the best show in town.
  9. Call an old friend and tell them what a gift they are to you.
  10. Make a gift to the Discretionary Fund at your church — they quietly do a lot of good.

The Jesse Tree and What it Means to Us:

You will note a tree standing in Trinity Hall bearing purple ribbons (lilac is the symbol of penitence). Jesus was of the house and lineage of David. Therefore he was a descendant of Jesse, David’s father, and a part of his family tree. Functioning like the Advent Calendar, the Jesse Tree provides for each day in Advent a story from the Old Testament of one of Jesus’ forbearers represented by a symbol which has been cut out and attached to the tree.

Our Jesse tree will also hold some of our contributions to the Adopted Families Project. Children and all members of the parish are asked to bring contributions of mittens, wool hats, underwear, items for teenagers, and yes, even blankets to place on or under the Tree. Toys are welcome too, and it has been stressed that items teenagers would like are especially needed. All gifts should be new, although blankets are acceptable if they are in very good condition. Please do not wrap your gifts. Items will be donated to Good Shepherd’s Christmas Store and to Old Man River’s Mission.

TRY SOFTER

A young boy traveled across Japan to the school of a famous martial artist. When he arrived at the dojo he was given an audience by the sensei. "What do you wish from me?" the master asked. "I wish to be your student and become the finest karateka in the land," the boy replied. "How long must I study?" "Ten years at least," the master answered. "Ten years is a long time," said the boy. "What if I studied twice as hard as all your other students?" "Twenty years," replied the master. "Twenty years! What if I practice day and night with all my effort?" "Thirty years," was the master's reply. "How is it that each time I say I will work harder, you tell me that it will take longer?" the boy asked. "The answer is clear. When one eye is fixed upon your destination, there is only one eye left with which to find the Way."

The Third Sunday in Advent:
         Lighting of the Rose Candle

The pink (or rose) candle calls to mind Mary the of Our Lord. It is lit, by custom, on the third Sunday of Advent, though in most years the lesson about Mary is on the fourth Sunday. It represents joy — profound joy like the joy expressed in what we know as the Maginficat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord….”

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen Book of Common Prayer
