Faith
@ Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
Amid the hustle and bustle of catching up after the holidays
the phone rang, Betty came into my office and said that Becky
Shields, writer for the Sentinel was on the phone. She wanted to
talk to me about an article she was writing on faith and love in the
new millennium. While I’m pretty sure we have begun a new century,
I am somewhat less sure that we have begun a new millennium — what
with there being no year “zero” and all. Anyway, I decided not
to go there in my conversation with Ms Shields. Her desire gave me
time for pause. What did I think? What did I believe about faith and
love in the coming decades.
Since I don’t get the Sentinel, and I don’t know when it
will be published, or if she will even care to publish it once she
gets it, I am sharing with you this concise reflection.
An article on Faith and Love in the New Millennium probably
presumes the question, “How will they be different in the New
Millennium?” Faith and love won’t be different – they are
fundamental essential elements of a life worth living. They exist or
they do not. I do hope that there will be an increase in both!
Classically (and biblically), faith is the assurance of things hoped
for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Faith walks
hand-in-hand with trust. As we discover God’s trustworthiness, I
hope we will be inspired to cultivate our own. Love is patient,
kind, not insistent on its own way. In our current world of
immediacy, in which “get it fast” and “have it your way”
rule the conduct of our lives, an increase in love won’t “just
happen.” For it to increase we must make a strident commitment to
increase our patience, exhibit heroic kindness, and respect the
dignity of every human being. Will faith and love increase? Only
time will tell.
May yours be a truly blessed new year.
God’s peace,

A
Joyful Christmas was Celebrated:
A Joyful Christmas was celebrated at Trinity. We began with Advent
celebrations and services including a Quiet Morning in Advent and the
Catered Dinner given by the ECW. December Supper Club was held at the home
of Dick and Joan Mason and the Lawsons’ hosted the Pairs and Spares
Ornament Party.
A wonderful St. Cecilia Event was held featuring the children’s choirs
of Neale School and Edison Jr. High, which are led by Trinitarians Barbara
Full and Julie Wright, respectively. Many hands were available for a Work
Day and for Brass Polishing as well as for the Greening of the Church.
Many thanks to Arlene Wetzel and the Trinity Choir for all the beautiful
music they provided us this Christmas. They did a stellar job on two tough
anthems on Christmas Eve, and also went caroling at Cedar Grove Care Center.
They made a special point to carol for former choir member Gene Smith and
his wife Mazie.
Many thanks to Paul Miller, who played recorder and sang; to Lexi
Grant-Snider, who wrote a beautiful litany; to Laura Hathaway, who read the
lesson; and to Susie and Hamp Fitcher, who helped set up and clean up for
the New Year's Eve service. Thanks also to all who came!
A thank-you to Allan Olson who joined other woodworkers in making
handcrafted cribs for teddy bears and for providing them to the Salvation
Army for Christmas presents. Way to go Allan. And thank-you of course to
Carol Olson and all those who participated in our Outreach programs at
Christmas, from bringing items for Personal Care Packages, items for our
Jesse Tree and for those who helped shop for and deliver packages to needy
families in our community. It has indeed been a Blessed Christmas !!!

Daily Prayers:
Everyone is reminded that they are welcome to join the staff for
daily prayers in Adams Chapel. They will be each weekday at 9:30 am
beginning on Monday, January 10.

A special thank-you to Chet !!
A big pat on the back to Chet
Waterman, who in addition to working the food
closet on Thursdays, also has been fixing kneelers and bookracks on the pews
in the church. You gotta keep your eye on Chet. You just never know what
kind of good deed he will be up to next.

Vestry Highlights:
The meeting was held on December 20th beginning with a simple Eucharist
inviting the Holy Spirit to guide us.
Out-going members were thanked for their hard work and service to the
Vestry. New members were introduced. A small reception was held for
out-going members at a break in the meeting.
Report was heard from Bob Brantner, head of the Accessibility Committee.
Approval to begin conversion of Ladies Lounge in Trinity Hall was given.
Reports were heard from various other committees, including Stewardship
Committee. The 2000 Budget was approved unanimously by the Vestry. (The
budget will be mailed to all households in January.)
Remember, full minutes and financial statements are posted
on the bulletin board as soon as they receive vestry approval.

Supper Club moved to 28th:
The date for this month’s Supper Club has been changed from the 14th to
Friday the 28th of January. Supper Club will be held at the home of LaVerne
Marshall and will begin at 6:30 p.m. as usual. Mark your calendars now and
plan to attend a fun evening with fellow Trinitarians !!

ECW
Winter Luncheon:
This year’s ECW Winter Luncheon will
be held on Friday, January 21st at the Parkersburg Country Club. The
luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. Our guest speaker for this year’s
luncheon will be Sister Barbara Jean of the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity.
All women of Trinity are invited to attend !!

Building and Grounds:
Building and Grounds Committee Chairperson Jennifer Currey, along
with Jackie Nicholson are coordinating a structural assessment of our
building and grounds. If anyone knows of anything specific around the church
and grounds that needs fixed or needs some attention, please contact
Jennifer or Jackie to let them know. There are many items on their list, but
they would like to make sure they haven’t missed anything. They will be
having professionals coming in to take a look around and giving estimates
for repair work sometime in the very near future.

Peterkin Essay

contest is being held, with prizes and awards for the winners and

“The
Traveling Brush” : (A report from
Trinity’s Artist-in Residence Lee Fritch)
In September Pat and I took
a painting and hiking trip to western Colorado and eastern Utah. My work is
mostly done in the studio but my first love is to paint outside. We flew
into Grand Junction, Colorado and rented a compact car for three weeks. Our
clockwise swing took us from Grand Junction to Montrose, Ouray, Durango and
Cortez, Colorado, spending three or four days in each place. Then we swung
into Utah, the most beautiful state in the lower 48, and used Moab as our
base for 5 days. Near each of these cities we visited several National and
State Parks. These included Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon of the
Gunnison, Ridgeway State Park (where John Wayne filmed True Grit),
Mesa Verde (8,000 feet up), “Four Corners”, Canyonlands/Dead Horse
Point, and Arches National Park.
The routine was to get up early, paint on location from eight to
noon-ish, have our picnic lunch, then go hike. I was able to get 17
paintings done. Painting outdoors has its special challenges. There are
hordes of tourists who wanted to watch and talk. I had to chase four cows
out of my painting site near Durango, and got scolded for wandering into
Indian country at Mesa Verde, (I thought I was still in the National Park).
The paintings were on display with a map, comment cards, and photos of me
and my easel MABEF doing our thing, at WESBANCO in Parkersburg during
November. Pat and I can’t wait to do another trip like this again. God has
really created some awesome scenery.

Happy New Millennium everyone!
Sunday the Ninth will be our first day back to Godly Play. ALL
PARENTS will receive more information in the mail, but please plan to
attend this day with your children. We'll start at 9:15 as usual. ALL
VOLUNTEERS will benefit by attending as well, though not necessary.
Volunteers will be receiving a two month schedule in the mail very
soon. I am trying to increase notice, and decrease my time on the
phone. I will do my best to work around the other church schedules of
things you may be involved in so no one will have to do two things on
one day. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
The
kids did a good job presenting their Christmas banners. We have a lot
of good readers and brave children to get up in front of the church
like that. Next year will bring something new, but the banners will be
kept and used to display in our classroom. If you didn't get the
chance to see them, stop by and take a look!
Thanks again to all of the parents for helping with costumes,
practicing reading parts, holding banners, quieting children, and for
bringing your children to participate. I hope you all got a chance to
rest up during the rest of the Holidays.
Peace,
Connie

Many
thanks to the people, some known
and some unknown, who provided snacks, treats and refreshments for the
youth group from North Holland, MI. From the newspaper coverage you
can tell that their effort to bring 7000 lbs of clothes to Ritchie
County was successful.
Thanks, too, to Bob D’Avria, Ex. Dir., of the YMCA for making showers
and swimming possible for the young people! |
