   Faith @ Fifth and Juliana

Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.

Book of Common Prayer pp. 264-265

Above you have the words which come to us in the proper liturgy for Ash Wednesday. They state clearly our Christian heritage in observing the days of “our Lord’s passion and resurrection.” It also invites us to observe a “holy Lent.” Lent, like most everything else of worth has an “investment factor.” One can ignore it, make no investment in it, and get nothing out of it. Or, one can commit to it, make an investment in it, and receive blessings and spiritual benefits beyond what we could have ever expected. You might consider:

Simplifying your life: make a meal a week more basic.

Commit to pray more regularly: tape a prayer, or list of people for whom you want to pray to your bathroom mirror and pray it each day.

Add An Act of Worship: Come to Stations of the Cross on Fridays, or do Daily Devotion for Noon (Prayer Book p. 138) at your desk or over your lunch tray — a photocopy will fit in your “daytimer.”

Faithfully yours,

Scott+

Times Deadline Changed

In an effort to get the Times to you in a more timely fashion, the deadline for articles and information has been changed. All items for the Times need to be to the editor by 5 PM on Fridays !! Information can be left in my mailbox at the church or information can be emailed to me at bcurry@trinitytimes.com. Hopefully this will help get the Times out a little quicker, and decrease the incidence of people receiving their Times “after the fact”. We are still trying to find a solution for our parishioners in Belpre. Please keep us informed as to how long it is taking you to receive your Times. They are generally getting in the mail on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and we are hoping to move this up to Monday. Many thanks for your cooperation, Betsy Curry.

St. Cecilia:

The next St. Cecilia Event is scheduled for Sunday, March 12th at 7 p.m. at Trinity. This month’s St. Cecilia event will feature Patricia Pease, Mezzo Soprano and Alejandro Cremaschi, piano. The St. Cecilia Events are open to everyone, you don’t have to be a part of the St. Cecilia Society or Trinity Church to attend these musical offerings. If you would like to become a member of the St. Cecilia Society it is open to all in the parish and community making a $25.00 contribution (students $10.00). St. Cecilia Society members will be listed in each program and their gifts co-sponsor the receptions to meet the artists following the event. For more information, contact Jackie Nicholson.

Supper Club:

The Supper Club will meet again on Friday, March 17th at the home of Doug and Carol Adams. Everyone is invited to attend. Just let Carol know if you are coming and what type of dish you will be bringing. Beverages will be provided, but if you have a favorite, please feel free to bring it with you. Mark your calendars now, and plan on spending an enjoyable evening of fun, food and fellowship with your fellow Trinitarians.

Holy Baptism

Congratulations go out to William Hollis Brooks, on his Baptism held last Sunday at Trinity. William is the son of Patrick and Suzanne Mildren Brooks. Proud grandparents are Bill and Cathy Mildren.

Finance Committee

Due to Ash Wednesday Services, the Finance Committee meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 15th at 5:00 P.M.

The members of the Trinity Crusade Cabinet would like to thank everyone at Trinity for their continued support of the upcoming Crusade. Through Sunday’s loose offerings and Crusade envelopes we were able to donate $800.00 to the Crusade effort.

We also ask for your continued prayers for the success of the Crusade and encourage everyone to continue to pray for Operation Andrew as well. If anyone has any questions or would like to help out with the Crusade in anyway, please contact Eric Lawson at 485-5050. There are still MANY opportunities to help out and become involved with the Crusade.

Connie’s Corner

I was out of town this past Sunday, so I hope all went well with Godly Play. Coming up this Sunday will hopefully be our Lenten puzzle-that is if one gets made by then (I still haven't had anyone volunteer). There is no scripture reading for this story. It is to help the children visualize and understand the Lenten season. The color is purple and there are six Sundays in order for us to get ready for Easter. Another way the children will get ready for Easter is to come to the Lenten Evenings. I will be holding a bible study with the video series "Unfiltered" for the children 8 yrs and up, in the new game room upstairs. Any adults wishing to help me, please let me know. Assistance will be much appreciated.

I hope to see you all there,
Connie

For young people and those who love them

Dear God,

Is that You whistling when the wind blows?
You’re really good, aren’t You?
Will you teach me how to whistle Your way?
If You do, I’ll whistle a prayer to You, OK?
