Faith @ Fifth
and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in
Christ,
I may well remember Lent 2000 for
the rest of my days. “How could that be?” you ask. “Lent is only
a few days old.” It happened when I read the newspaper this morning
(March 13, 2000). It seems that something which has been a part of my
prayers for years has, in some measure, moved from hope to reality,
from dream to miracle.
You see, according to the article
I read there was a service at St. Peter’s, Rome, in which the Pope
and several of the College of Cardinals and others confessed the sins
of the Church down through the ages — our mistreatment of Jews, of
people of other faith traditions, of women, and of minorities are but
a few examples. This is a landmark event. While individual clusters of
the church have done such things before, never has Rome, or as far as
I know, any other overarching denominational body done such a thing.
You will no doubt hear many
editorials saying that what happened in Rome did not go far enough or
on the other hand that it was just a “show.” The miracle here is
not fully found in the content. The miracle here is that it has
happened at all. It has been many years since the “burning of
heretics,” and the atrocities of the Crusades. It has been three
plus ‘biblical’ generations since the Holocaust. It would be easy
to continue to ignore and press onward. But, God calls us to
self-examination and repentance.
If the Church, after low these
many years, can screw up its courage enough, and trust in God’s
grace enough to confess, and seek healing, amendment of life and the
power of God’s forgiveness, it would seem that we could as well.
I pray you can join me in being
caught up in the miracle of this event. I pray you and I can avoid any
form of self-righteousness which leads us to believe that we don’t
(as individuals and as a denomination) need to do the same. Finally, I
pray that we may be inspired by this witness to confront the places in
our lives and hearts which we need to lay bare before God (and maybe
others) in order to receive forgiveness, absolution and remission of
our sins as well.
May you find the deep blessedness
of Lent.
Faithfully yours,
Scott+

Help
wanted:
Many hands to build Episcopal House
The three Episcopal churches, Trinity and Good Shepherd in Parkersburg
with Christ Church in Williamstown, are committed to building a home with a
partner family in Habitat for Humanity. A steering committee with
representatives from all three churches has been meeting monthly to plan
this work. You will be seeing new signs in each church to mark progress in
fundraising for the home. You may already have a small house-shaped bank to
use during Lent for this purpose.
We are good at raising money and we will need to raise more for this
project. We are also great at making and taking meals to others. We will
need to do that when the building starts too. But the work that will change
your heart and your life will come from taking a tool in your hands and
working beside the partner families as they learn and grow during the
building phase.
"But I don't have carpenter skills. I always call a plumber when we
have a leak. I would be afraid I would do something wrong." We all said
that when we first volunteered at a building site. The joy of learning how
to do the basic tasks of building is only surpassed by the joy that comes
from watching the partner families grow in confidence and strength.
So plan now to be very involved in building this home, not only in
raising funds and baking cakes, but working at the building site in any way
that you can. A skills survey will soon be distributed. Remember to make
note of skills that you don't own but would be willing to develop.

Pancake Supper: Many thanks to
all the Men of Trinity for their hard work and great food at the Shrove
Tuesday Pancake Supper. Also, thanks to everyone who came to eat all those
pancakes. We had a great turn-out this year thanks in part to James and
Julie Wright who brought over a group of kids from Edison Jr. High. It was
great to have a full house. And also, many thanks to Beth West and Betsy
Curry for all their help in coordinating the event.

St. Cecilia: This past Sunday
the St. Cecilia Society presented its program for March featuring Patricia
Pease, Mezzo Soprano and Alejandro Cremaschi, Piano. The performance was
wonderful, and a substantial portion of those attending were young people!
The next (and last two of the Series) offerings of the St. Cecilia Society
will be: Sunday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity and will feature Raymond
Tymas-Jones, Tenor. And, the last Event of the series will be, Sunday, May
7th at 7:00 p.m. and will feature John Schlabach, Trumpet, and Arlene
Wetzel, organ. Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend one or both
of these final musical offerings of the St. Cecilia Society.

. Supper Club:
The Supper Club will meet again on Friday, March 17th at the home of Doug
and Carol Adams. Everyone is invited to attend. Please call Carol as soon as
possible at 295-4873 if you are coming and to tell her what type of dish you
will be bringing. Beverages will be provided, but if you have a favorite,
please feel free to bring it with you. Plan on coming out and spending an
enjoyable evening of fun, food and fellowship with your fellow Trinitarians.

St Anne’s Guild : The
next meeting of the St. Anne’s Guild will be Tuesday, March 21st at 1 p.m.
at the home of Emily Grayson.

Celebration 2000 Prayer Group:
One of the most important ways to contribute to the Crusade is Prayer.
The Trinity Church Cabinet will host a 45 minute prayer group on Wednesday
after the Lenten dinner and presentation (approximate start time 7:45) in
the Adams Chapel. The group will pray for the Operation Andrew selections as
well as for the success of the Crusade in bringing the unchurched to Christ.
ALL ARE INVITED!

Celebration 2000 Love-in-Action Sunday Coming March 19th !
An important ministry of the
Celebration 2000 (Crusade) is the Love-in-Action Project. The Love-in-Action
Project encourages us to show God's love in our community by supporting the
following projects: Sanctuary House, Boys and Girls Club Teen Center,
Faithlink Interfaith Volunteers Caregivers, and Old Man Rivers Mission. This
Sunday you will be provided with "Wish Lists" from each of these
ministries. Please consider how you can put your love in action during AND
after the Crusade.
"Let us stop just saying we love people; and let us really love them
and show it by our actions" 1 John 3:18

SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!
A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell
into the farmer's well. The farmer heard the mule 'braying' - or -
whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing
the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that
neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving.
Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had
happened...and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in
the well and put him out of his misery. Initially, the old mule was
hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling
and the dirt hit his back...a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned
on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back...HE
SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow.
"Shake it off and step up...shake it off and step up...shake it
off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how
painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed the old mule
fought "panic" and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND
STEPPING UP! You're right! It wasn't long before the old mule,
battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT
WELL! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him...all
because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. THAT'S LIFE!
If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to
give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity………..THE ADVERSITIES
THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO
BENEFIT AND BLESS US! Remember that FORGIVENESS--FAITH--PRAYER--PRAISE
and HOPE...all are excellent ways to "SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP
UP" out of the wells in which we find ourselves!
