Faith @ Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
Easter Sunday has come and gone, but Easter remains with us. It remains,
as I shared with the children on Sunday morning, for a full fifty days. And then it remains with us longer
because each time we worship on the Lord’s Day (Sunday) we are celebrating Easter. We are celebrating
resurrection. We are celebrating new life. Not old life resuscitated, but new life.
It would be nice if we could snap our fingers and simply “live this new
life.” It seems, however, that we cannot. Old habits cling fast. Old ways change slowly. Old relationships
find comfort in familiar, if not-so-helpful, patterns.
Living New Life, living resurrection, is not easy because of our craving
for the familiar or comfort with constancy. The truth is, relationships, landscapes, language, life, and
everything around us is constantly changing. Our fondness with the familiar is something of an illusion. Even
our relationship with God changes.
Believers, new and old, travel through stages. In our early relationship
with God we often hold the image of an enthroned monarch, all-seeing, who always sees us when we do “bad,”
so we should be good. Later, our relationship with the Divine may be a source to blame for “mistakes” in
our lives: “Why didn’t you show me the way more clearly?” God can be a repository for our anger, the
helpful twister of fate, the giver of edicts to be followed lock-step. God can also be our listening ear, a
conversationalist beyond belief, a shoulder to cry on, a friend who speaks the truth in love.
It is hard to leave the old life because God does not force us to leave
the old life. We are called to new life. It is an invitation, not a mandate. To accept the invitation means we
move, alter (or should that be “altar”) our position, change. Sometimes change is instantaneous. Sometimes
it is blindingly slow. Always it requires our investment which, by-the-way, is already met with God’s
investment of Jesus died and risen.
Preparing for change takes a long time. We call it Lent. Change itself
takes longer (by at least 25%). We call it Easter. May we course these Great Fifty Days with the expectation,
the anticipation of change: New Life change.
Blessings & peace,
Scott+ |
Easter at Trinity
A wonderful Easter was celebrated at Trinity, and many thanks go out to all who helped make it a great day. The
church looked beautiful thanks to all the Altar Guild members who worked so hard the week before at the brass
polishing and on Easter Eve to fill the church with beautiful flowers. Thanks to Sandi and Eric Lawson for bringing
down the “flower” cross and for all the young people who helped decorate it and bring it down the aisle at the
Offertory. We all enjoyed the glorious music provided by our choir and our organist, Arlene Wetzel, and to the brass
ensemble from Ohio University. The young people enjoyed an Easter egg hunt following services and everyone enjoyed a
lovely coffee hour provided by Lynette Neilson. Last but certainly not least, we thank Father Hunter for his
presence and spirit which make our lives at Trinity so special and fulfilling.

kudos to Julie. Also, Becky Alkire, son John and daughter-in-law Kara recently ran in the Race for the Cure 3 mile
