Faith @
Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
For me this period of late May is one
of the holiest times of the year. It is usually in the waning days of Eastertide.
Ascension Day looms near or has just past and Pentecost with its eternal gift of the
Spirit looms large before us. The “new” green of the foliage and the richness of the
air make my awareness of “new life” palpable. It is a season of change. It is a season
of growth.
One of the ways this change is made
real (incarnate) for me is in ‘looking back.’ Specifically, I can see the shelves and
shelves of produce my father had grown and my family had canned. The colors, shapes and
textures were amazing. So was the toil, the aromas, and the amount of work required in
accomplishing restocking. It was great to look back on it and see, but it was hard to see
as it was taking place — what with being preoccupied by the ‘work’ of it all.
Summer is a great time for ‘looking
back.’ It is a great time to examine how growth and change in one’s spiritual life and
one’s relationship with Jesus have taken shape. It is also a time to look for the tender
shoots of new spiritual growth which are taking shape and to be intentional about
cultivating and nourishing them.
In the summer meetings tend to be less
frequent. Time away is often increased. The rhythm of life for most folk changes, though
that does not infer that life is less chaotic or busy, just different. But being different
is enough. Being different means that there are gaps and nooks and crannies into which we
can fit some time to reflect on the growth that has happened or upon where growth is
needed. It is a time where we can look for the places where we could use some spiritual
pruning and even locate where a well placed stake could give us some extra support when we
need it the most.
As we stand in transition, may we
always remember that our call as Christians is to transition, that is to change, from the
ways of the world to the ways of God. May we see the profound abundance of new life. May
we not cling so tenaciously to that which needs to be shed. And, may the Divine Gardener
prune and shape us — remembering that unlike plants, we must be willing to stand still
long enough for that to happen.
Blessings & peace,

Recognition of Choir and Godly Play Participants:
On Sunday, June 4th we will be recognizing Arlene Wetzel
and all the choir members for their faithful service during this past year. We will also
recognize everyone who has participated in the Godly Play program. June 4th will be the last day
of Sunday School and the last day to enjoy our choir until fall. Sunday is also Pentecost, so
don’t forget to wear red.
Following the service, the Episcopal Church Men will be serving their now famous “gourmet”
hot dogs and ice cream in Trinity Hall. Eric Lawson is in need of help from the men to
coordinate this event, so please give him a call at 485-5050 if you can help.

Opportunity for Baptism: This Sunday, June 11th
(Pentecost) is our next opportunity for Baptism. If you or anyone you know is interested in
receiving Holy Baptism, please contact Father Hunter at 422-3362 as soon as possible.

Presidential Scholar Award:
John
Northrup, son of Frank and Dorsey, has been named as one of West Virginia’s two Presidential
Scholars. This is the highest honor the nation can bestow upon a graduating high school senior.
John will be a guest of the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Commission of
Presidential Scholars on June 27-July 2 in Washington, D.C. Scholars will participate in
receptions, panel discussions, leadership/team building activities, a program at the Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts, a dinner cruise, and a Presidential Scholars Medallion Ceremony.
Our many congratulations go with you, John !!!!!
Also, John Northrup, Charlotte Dauphin and Dianne Johnson will all be graduating in the top
5% of their graduating classes !! Also graduating this year from PHS will be Tiffany Orem,
daughter of Everette Orem and Denise Orem. Congratulations go out to all our graduates and their
many accomplishments !

Shepherds and Bread Ministry to Meet: On
Sunday, June 4th following the 10:30 a.m. service, there will be a SHORT meeting of the
Shepherds committee and the “Bread Ministry” providers. The meeting will be in the
conference room.

Finance Committee: The next meeting of the
Finance Committee will be Wednesday, June 14th at 5 p.m. in the conference room.

ECW Spring Luncheon:
On
Saturday, May 20th, the ECW held their Spring Luncheon at the home of Diana Everett Ruley.
Although the weather was a little inclement, everyone enjoyed the luncheon. Holy Eucharist was
followed by a short meeting. The guest speaker for the luncheon followed the meeting and was
Jackie Scott who runs the P.S. Project on 19th Street here in Parkersburg. P.S. Project stands
for Peer Support and is a non-profit organization that was formed to help mental health clients
with their needs in the community through a support group and a transitional/supportive housing
program.
The P.S. Project provides a support meeting for clients to meet and talk, activities to
participate in, temporary housing, and referral to community resources. The P.S. Project house
is located at 1517 19th Street. Jackie is the Executive Director and also the ONLY employee.
Everything that needs to be done at the P.S. Project House is being done by Jackie. Although the
clients that live at the P.S. House
are responsible for helping to take care of the house and their rooms, there are many, many
tasks that Jackie is responsible for doing, (and this doesn’t include taking care of herself
and two children). If anyone is interested in volunteering any amount of time, large or small,
to the P.S. Project Jackie will meet you with open arms. The types of activities you can
volunteer to help out with are: shopping, minor repair work, help with misc. paper work, help
coordinating activities, teaching crafts, playing games or just coming by the house to chat with
some of the clients. If you are interested in helping the P.S. Project out in any way, contact
Jackie Scott at 485-8831.
Finally, many thank-you’s need to go out to everyone who helped coordinate and serve at the
luncheon, especially Diana for contributing her home. Thanks to Barbara Bailey for the flowers,
Emily Grayson for the invitations, Susie Fitcher, Charlotte and Bill Bee, Linda Brantner, Becky
Johnson, Paula Sellers, Carol Ralsten, Lucy Hill, Beth West, Tina Hunter, Pat Fritch and Betsy
Curry for contributing their help to the luncheon. And also to the anonymous donor of the
beverages and the mint truffles.

Book Marking: Do you have an hour or two on
Tuesdays or Wednesdays? Book marking is a pleasant, easy and productive way to spend time. If
summer finds you less pressured, come then. If you have more freedom in the fall, the Bookworms
will look for you in September. Book marking starts on Tuesday, June 6th at 10:00 am. Please
come if you can !!

ECM to Present Alpha Course
The newly formed Episcopal Church Men of Trinity will
be joining together to sponsor an Alpha Course for our parish. Alpha is a practical introduction
to the Christian faith, giving an opportunity for both Trinity parishioners to review and
strengthen our commitment to Christ, and for searchers to explore Christianity. Since 1992, the
course has touched the lives and souls of over one million people in 62 countries. Another
million are expected to complete the course by the end of this year. It has received the
blessing of the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, who sees it as a most effective
evangelistic outreach.
Its message is simple, yet timeless. Jesus Christ was the greatest person is all history. He
came to earth as the Son of God in order to give us new life. We can join with him by asking him
into our lives and hearts, and in so doing be changed. There is no emotional hard sell, no
tugging of heartstrings or browbeating. Relevant life issues are discussed from a Christian
perspective. Expect it to be thought provoking, and extremely rewarding. All of Trinity are
invited to join in the sharing of this program. Talk with Eric Lawson, Father Hunter, or James
Wright if you would like to volunteer or have questions.

Men’s Group Survey’s :
Don’t forget to fill out the survey regarding the ECM and bring them in to church. There is a
basket in the Memorial Room designated for the surveys. If you are not going to be at the church
in the next couple of weeks, mail them to the church at 430 Juliana Street, Parkersburg, WV
26101.

Supper Club: The next Supper Club will be
Friday, June 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Craig and Betsy Curry. Please call Betsy at
422-0466 by Wednesday, June 14th to let her know if you are coming and what type of dish you
will be bringing. Barbeque sandwiches and drinks will be provided, if you have a favorite
beverage you are welcome to bring it. The directions to the Curry’s are as follows: Take 7th
Street to Route 50 East, go 1 mile past I-77 and turn Left onto Red Hill Road, go approximately
1/4 of a mile and turn left onto Winding Road. Follow Winding Road for 2 1/2 miles. The Curry’s
driveway is on the left, there is a black mailbox at the bottom of the driveway with the number
458 on it. Turn up driveway and park wherever available. As you are coming out Winding Road
please stay on Winding Road, DO NOT turn up
Winding Heights Road or turn up Spider Ridge Road. Stay on Winding Road, going past Winding Road
Kennel. The Curry driveway will be marked and is approximately 1/2 mile past the Kennel. Hope to
see lots of folks there. This will be the last Supper Club event until fall.

Attention Altar Guild: The Sacristy is missing
several pieces of linen. If anyone has any items, lavabo
towels, purificators etc., please return them to the
Sacristy as soon as possible. Susie Fitcher is wanting to take an inventory of all the linens so
that items that might be needed can be purchased. As linens are quite expensive, it is best to
do as accurate an inventory as possible. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Dear Fellow Trinitarians,
This will be my last article in the Times. It has been a privilege of mine to serve my home
parish as DRE. However, the time has come for me to step down. This position, though
part-time, is very time consuming. Due to my situation, I am unable to dedicate the kind of
time needed in order for things to run smoothly. I would much rather have someone take over
than to feel I am shirking my duties. Many thank-you's go out….. Thank you to the adults
and parents who have given of their time and talents. Many have been present on Sunday
mornings to help the Godly Play plans run nicely. Others have made or donated materials to
be used in telling stories. And of course we had the Lawson, West, Curry, and Hunter
families who ran the youngster's Lenten program. I hope all of you will return next year to
help again. If everyone could recruit one friend to help, all the better! It's more fun to
work with a friend, and you can learn so much from these kids. Also, thank you for the kind
words and reception two Sundays ago. It's nice to know some of you felt things had gone
well.
Finally, I leave you with this thought; The Christian Education of our children is up to
all of us, whether they are biologically ours or not. I'm a true believer that it takes a
whole village to raise a child. We have our very own "village" family here at
Trinity Church. Please be a part of this program any way that you can. Meanwhile, I'll still
be around and active in the life of this church. See you on Sunday,
Connie
