Faith @
Fifth and Juliana
Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
A friend of mine, a clergy person in another Christian
tradition, used to tell me how there were times when he thought it was good that we
(clergy in my tradition) were called “Father” because it was helpful when one had to
take a “fatherly” stand with the family. This is one of those times.
I need to spend some time with you on appropriate behavior,
particularly how we treat one another. Each of us has made a Covenant with God and with
every other member of the Body of Christ (the Church) to respect the dignity of every
human being. A pattern is emerging which exhibits a lack of such respect within this
community and I cannot fail to address it. I would like to address it in a one-on-one
manner as Scripture suggests, but due to the presentation of the problem, that is not
possible. So I have to use this as a teachable moment for the whole family. Many of you
have learned and daily live this lesson, for you it brings an “of course, what else
would you do” response. For some, it many be the first time you have heard this … and
I regret that. For others it is a call to attention and to return “to respect the
dignity of every human being.” [And before we quickly place ourselves in one of the
first two categories, each of us needs to be called to attention and accountability from
time to time.]
The pattern which has emerged is in how we communicate with a
person in the family of faith when we have a problem with something that they have said,
done, or not done. Scripture is our guide here, specifically the eighteenth chapter of
Matthew. When we have a problem we FIRST go directly to the individual. We address them
directly, one-to-one. If the individual does not listen then we are to come again with an
observer. If that does not bear fruit, then it is taken to the appropriate larger part of
the body. [Note that listening means something different from “giving us our way.”]
Anonymous (unsigned) letters, tiny typed notes (also
anonymous), conversations peppered with phrases like “some people are saying,” or “a
lot of people want,” or “people don’t like…” are inappropriate ways for
Christians to treat each other (or anyone else for that matter).
So, this is a heads up. If you didn’t know before, now you
do. If you did and forgot, it is a reminder. And, if you need to communicate with someone
in the parish about a problem, wound, challenge or some other issue, do it by claiming the
issue as your own. Identify yourself and get on with the resolution and, if needed
reconciliation. Otherwise, you will never know the power and joy of being one in Christ
[and it won’t be the other person’s burden.]
Faithfully and prayerfully yours,
Scott+
When you are offering
your gift at the altar … first go and be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then
come and offer your gift. [Matt 5:23ff para.] |

opening their home for this event.
Supper Club is open to all members of the parish and is a happy way of getting to know
the Trinity family. The next gathering will be Friday September 15th at the home of Carol

Vacation Bible School:
Trinity will be taking part in a joint Vacation
Bible School along with Good Shepherd and Christ Memorial of Williamstown. The dates for
Vacation Bible School are August 7-11th from 9 a.m.-12 noon and is to be held at Good
Shepherd. There will be a class for 3 and 4 yr olds of church members only, and classes for
Kindergarten thru 6th graders which are open to everyone. The theme for the Vacation Bible
School will center around the Episcopal Habitat House that is to begin construction in
September. A curriculum put out by Habitat for Humanity will be used and the kids will be
doing several different projects related to the Habitat House. House shaped doorstops, a
Habitat Banner for each church, and bookshelves are just some of the projects being planned.
Lots of volunteers will be needed to make the Vacation Bible School a success. Teachers
and helpers will be needed for each class, as well as volunteers to help with crafts, music,
games, and two people are needed to help with a skit that is to be presented each morning.
Jr. High and Sr. High students are urged to help out. There will be a nursery for people
helping with the Bible School and helpers are needed there also. If you can only give one
morning of your time that would be great. A commitment for the 5 days is not necessary. Work
“parties” for the adults to prepare craft and building materials will be held at Good
Shepherd on July 19th and 26th at 7 P.M. A nursery attendant and refreshments will be
provided. Please contact Betsy Curry at 422-0466 or Yvonne Corra of Good Shepherd at
422-2126 if you are interested in helping out in any way ! Donations of lumber are also
needed and will be greatly appreciated.
