The Call of a Bishop:

You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ.

CAN ANYTHING GOOD COME OUT OF WHEATON?

Sitting in the congregation at Wesley Chapel last Saturday, I was struck with awe and hope by the emotional expectations of a sparkling, new beginning of life within our diocese. All of us have been in stormy seas for so many months and are eager to set sail in new directions.

I have high expectations of our Seventh Bishop……and so must you! We expect anything and everything in our world. We expect the contradictory and impossible. We expect compact cars which are spacious and luxurious…...yet, they must be economical and low cost. We expect to eat what we want…...yet stay thin. We expect to possess everything…...yet, we forget there is always a price to be paid for our demands. We always expect much…...yet, sometimes we forget our part in those expectations.

Lest we forget about this matter of expectations, we need to remember that our new bishop is not a “purple bellhop” who can be programmed to solve every problem as we see the problem. If we see Bishop Klusmeyer as a great vending machine who delivers the goods on command……. if we see him as a minister who can be summoned to answer our whims of the moment…..we expect too much and will not receive such demands.

Our relationship with our new bishop is to me, quite contractual. Meaning, that if we are to move forward together, he must expect from us our very best in support and love. My expectation is that the same will surely be returned to us. Remember, now is the end of one era but within it are carried the seeds of a new day. We all must help by plowing and nurturing those seeds. They must bloom.

In John1:46, Nathanael was found by Philip. He was asked to join those who would walk with Jesus. He spoke to Philip the well known verse……..

Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”

Then, a few verses later, comes one of the most buoyant notes of expectation ever written as Jesus says to him………

“Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?”

his is the ultimate in expectations. In this, our new bishop will find his confidence and hope. Here is the affirmation that this is a part of God’s world and all of us together are to be a part of it. In our new beginning, there can be no space for a politely smothered yawn. No time for any of us to drag our feet or waste our time in negative thoughts or remembrances. Nothing is static. Life is movement …...always in process and in that is a call for us to a welcomed fresh start.

Let all our hearts now overflow with expectancy as one united people under God. We are living together in one of the most beautiful places in His kingdom…..West Virginia. Let us remember all our past strength…..where we’ve been….where we want to go. Let us put aside any doubts or concerns harbored from the past and remember this….

After all, didn’t Jesus respond to Nathanael by saying “You shall see greater things than these”.

Indeed, we shall ! And God Bless,

Jack+

K O I N O N I A

Koinonia is perhaps a new word in your vocabulary! It’s a Greek word meaning “fellowship”. I have used it for many years as an Op-Ed place where I could write whatever is on my mind. I’ve learned I need such a place where I can do just that. It belongs to you too………should you like to use it. After all, that’s what participation means! It not for every week just when needed.

When discussed at “coffee hour”, people get defensive should the subject of church attendance arise. People quickly drift away from the priest. I don’t bring it up any more.

Yet this is fact……

For the past three months, our 10:30 Sunday attendance is down significantly when compared to the same period last year. That’s a serious matter to me since I believe we all need to be fed every week. Not only do we personally need it, but worship calls us to be together. Otherwise, we could read the service at home and feel we have filled the need.

But, the truth is we cannot fill it that way. If it were possible to be fulfilled that way, we might do it.

Nor am I suggesting there are not good, valid reasons for not being here such as ……...sickness, travel or other personal responsibilities. It’s when absence becomes a habit that concerns me. Habits, good and bad, are so easy to entrap us. When they are habits not in our best interest, I am concerned for each of you and your families.

This priest is not measuring our church attendance as a matter of numbers that satisfy. That matters little unless we are not meeting your needs. (I hope that is not true.)

It was such a joy for our family to be able to celebrate Mary Lou’s life here at Trinity. So many of you worked so hard to make Trinity “shine” and we do appreciate all of the hard work, time and effort for this special day in our family’s life.

Thank you, thank you,

Doug and Carol

Alpha Course

The Alpha Course continues on Friday nights, 6-9 PM. Dinner is included. Please come and join us!

Computers, computers...

The latest in leading edge is now a part of our parish.  We are now running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with MS Terminal Server 2000 clients.  This allows all licensed client systems to not only have the complete look and feel of a shiny new leading edge computer, but also offers Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Office Pro 2000, and Church Windows.

What's more, it allows work from home to anybody who has internet access, and a valid logon and a client access license.  Much like the popular PC Anywhere, Microsoft Terminal Server 2000 is a remote desktop program.  The technical term for this is "thin-net" computing. Even over a connection as slow as 48.8, the thing fly's compared to some of the old systems in the office.  Just ask Betty how fast the "New Server" is.

Trinity's Search

The search for a new rector is moving right along.  Last night (10/18/01), the Diocesan Deployment Officer gave us a list of names.  The committee is reviewing the list, and in the weeks to come will begin the discernment process. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to drop an email to search@trinitytimes.com.

From the Education Desk of DRE Julie Button…

All Saint’s Day is November 1st and the teachers and I have planned a party for the children during class on Oct. 28th. We will celebrate with informative stories, games, crafts, and of course, there will be goodies! You might get the “ball rolling” by asking

them what they know about a particular Saint. Also, keep your eyes open for some “saintly” pumpkins displayed in the hall that Sunday!

As I have written before, establishing traditions and observing holidays gives all of us a sense of well-being. To celebrate means to observe an occasion with respect or festivity; to extol or praise. The Saints are more than deserving of a special day of celebration. So, too, are the saints with the little “s”. They would be - you and me, and anyone who tries their best to live according to Christ’s teachings.

So, when is “all saints” day? Well, that would be every Sunday and the service is our celebration - our exalting of the Triune God. We observe with respect who God is, what God offers us, and what He blesses us with. We ingest Him in the Eucharist in the hopes of becoming more like Him. We extol our love of Him and His love for us!

Some children were asked, “What is love?” One little girl answered, “Love is when your mommy reads you a bedtime story. True love is when she doesn’t skip any pages.” God doesn’t skip any pages. We saints shouldn’t either! Lord, bless us with the same reward as You have given the Saints!

Peace, Julie
