The Patron Saint of Scotland is Andrew…..we remember him each year on November 30th. It is because Scotland has an important gift to the Episcopal Church that we celebrate this relationship on Sunday. More on this inside.

Assuming weather conditions remain good, we will gather outside on Juliana Street and be “piped” into worship by Joseph Quick with his bagpipes. If weather turns cold or rainy, we will gather and process from the Memorial Room. Do come and join in the celebration!

If you have kilts, or even a tartan clan plaid of any kind as a skirt, blouse or sweater…..do wear them on this day and be a part of the celebration.

Many of the prayers will be partly taken from the “Wee Bookie” which was a Scottish service pamphlet used in the 17th century churches. Learn more about this inside.

It was the summer of 1637 at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland…………

King Charles I had insisted the Scottish bishops receive and accept the new Book of Common Prayer provided by the Church of England that there might be a uniform order of worship for Charles’ whole kingdom. The Scottish BCP, drafted by Scottish Bishops, was a noble liturgy in itself and was quite acceptable to the people of that land but……....

It all “got out of hand” when the Cathedral Dean in Edinburgh attempted to read from the new service book. The story goes that a vegetable-seller named Jenny Geddes threw her stool at the head of the Dean. She missed him! A major riot ensued in the church and continued outside in the streets. The use of the book was suspended.

King Charles remained obstinate and autocratic. He enraged all his people with acts that eventually sent him to the gallows.

We remember the people of Scotland on this day because the apostle Andrew is their Patron Saint. His remains were taken to Scotland which was, in early times, the farthest distance in the Greek world. Those remains were later destroyed but bone fragments of Andrew were given to the people of Scotland in 1879 by Pope Paul VI.

All this brings us forward to the formative days of our country when England, after losing her colonies, refused to consecrate any bishops for America unless they would swear allegiance to the King! Samuel Seabury, a Connecticut priest, selected by convention, went to London and made a personal attempt to be consecrated but was refused.

He then traveled to Edinburgh where the Church of England was not held in high regard. He was warmly received was consecrated in 1784. Most assuredly, without the willingness of the Anglican Church in Scotland to consecrate, things might be quite different for all of us.

God Bless all of you and may your holiday be one of thankfulness and joy.

Thanksgiving Day Service

Our Thanksgiving Day service will be at 10am from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. We have been asked by members of our congregation to use this book on many occasions. We are using it once on this day to fill that request.

Farewell to Michael and Leigh

We have enjoyed having both Michael and Leigh Hadaway be a part of the Trinity family for the past eighteen months. Michael, as our Curate and Leigh as a Lector and leader in adult education. They both helped form the startup of the Alpha series just concluded (a new session should start up soon after the holidays). They have made an exciting contribution enriching our lives. They will be sorely missed by all of us as they begin a new life in the Diocese of Virginia.

Many Trinitarians stayed after service last Sunday to wish them well at a reception held in their honor. They were presented with a purse and a lovely painting to thank them for being a part of our life.

Restoration Project

Sunday, November 11th, there was an outpouring of support for what must be done to restore the exterior of our church. There are four willing members who are preparing the next steps to begin the project next spring. They will make every effort to keep everyone aware of all the activities as they develop. Roger Sellers, Bob Spence, Forbes Hiehle and Craig Curry will be your contacts as questions arise.

Every Member Canvas

What a pleasant surprise!! Our canvas is done with less than ten cards to be returned. It would appear that our pledged total will exceed last year at this time by 10%….amount pledged is $250,000. Hopefully this will enable us to meet all our obligations and reserve an amount larger than in the past for outreach. After Vestry approval, a preliminary budget will be provided at our annual meeting.

Supper Club Thanks…

go to Marion and Charlie Culbertson for the happy time in their home last Friday evening! If you missed it, please put the date for the next gathering on your calendars. It is Friday, December 7th at 6:30 p.m., at the home of LaVerne Marshall. Yes, she says she will be fine and can do it, the Lord willing! See you there, and thank you, again, Marion and Charlie!

Everyone wants to help with the cost of repairing our church, and the children are no exception! The young people would like to put on a bake sale sometime in December. The exact date will be in the next Times. Could the adults donate cookies and / or homemade candy for this event? We’ll have further information, but we wanted to put the thought in your minds!

A Psalm (128) for your Thanksgiving:

The Happy Home of the Just

Happy are all who fear the Lord,

Who walk in the ways of God.

What your hands provide you will enjoy;

you will be happy and prosper:

Like a fruitful vine

   your wife within your home,

Like olive plants

   your children around your table.

Just so will they be blessed

   who fear the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Zion,

all the days of your life...

Trinity's Search

We have received a good response and are in the process of copying and distributing the information for the positive answers among the committee members.  Thanksgiving crept up on us rather quickly, so we will be heavily into it next week.

Let us continue to pray for the committee, the candidates and our church, as we pursue the task of finding a new priest. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to drop an email to the committee: search@trinitytimes.com.

 From the Education Desk:

There is a story about a Vermont couple who had been married for over forty years. One night as they sat on their porch, the farmer realized how very much his wife meant to him; she was a willing and hard worker, never complaining, and pleasant company to be with. He leaned closer to her and said, “Wife, you’ve been such a wonderful woman that there are times I can hardly keep from telling you.”

Our prayers might be kind of like that story. We eagerly run to God when things are bad or when we want something! Are we as enthusiastic about our praise and thanksgiving? In one of his books, Max Lucado shared this experience he had. One of his children had fallen into a swimming pool and nearly drowned. Fortunately, the child was rescued and recovered completely. That evening Max went to God in prayer. As he was giving his heartfelt thanks, he believes he heard God ask him, “If I had taken your child today, would you still be thanking me tonight, Max?” I had an epiphany when I read that! Are all of my prayers self-serving? Will my faith in God allow me to praise Him despite what befalls me?

The reasons we pray are many and varied. Certainly we pray out of need, as we should. This is our connection to God, our communication link. But let’s not forget to give our praise and thanksgiving for everything in our lives, good or bad. Another thing we need to remember is that God doesn’t need our praise; our souls need to praise Him. Our spiritual well-being is dependent upon prayer and praise. Lord, I can hardly keep from telling You…

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Julie

Julie
