Faith @
Fifth and Juliana
We will hear
on Sunday the story of Jesus taking Peter, James and John on a
trip up the mountain. The scene of awe and fear belongs to them.
They were the only people present.
We are not
called to life on that mountaintop but to one in the valley below
where our cross waits for us; the cross we must pick up and carry
even if the weight of it could rob us of life.
For in the
end, it is not the mountaintop but here, wherever we live, that
God waits for us, and welcomes us, supports and loves us. It is
here, in the very midst of our busy and cluttered lives that He
comes.
This does
not mean we are doomed forever to live in fear. It is not cause
for despair if we can learn with Moses and Joshua, Peter, James
and John, that we are absolutely dependent on God.
I read this
week a story about Robert Frost, the poet. He died more than
thirty years ago. I had forgotten for a moment that he read a poem
in 1961 at President Kennedy’s inauguration.
For all his
public triumphs, his private life was dark. One son died at the
age of three; another child committed suicide. A favorite daughter
died of fever while giving birth. Authorities placed his sister in
a mental institution; another daughter was also confined for
mental problems. The only daughter who survived blamed her father
for all these misfortunes.
Still Frost
said “God seems to me to be something which wants us to win,
just as God eventually survives the setbacks of the world to
eventually win”.
It is here
in our valley with all our weaknesses that He comes to give us
strength, here in our sin and failure that He offers forgiveness,
here in the midst of our sickness and death, He makes good His
promise of life lived fully now…..and forever.

A PRAYER FOR OUR SEARCH
Heavenly Father, we give thanks for our Parish family
and ask for you guidance as we go forward in the selection of a new
rector for Trinity Church. Unite us in common purpose, make us
instruments of your will and bless our diversity as we use our
individual gifts to reach our goal. Send the Holy Spirit to be with us
and hold hands as we walk in Your light to do what you would have us do.
Bless the Search Committee and all our congregation as we go forth in
Jesus’ name. Amen.

From
the Education Desk:
From the education desk…
I’m sure that you have seen or at least heard about the
billboards along the highways that contain “messages from God”.
One of them reads, “What part of ‘Thou shalt not…’ didn’t
you understand? - God”. I like that one because I can relate to
it! For a long time I took the Commandments at surface value. I now
know that they really go much deeper. Let’s look at number two.
“You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve
idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on
the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow
down before them or worship them. For I, the Lord, your God, am a
jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers wickedness on the
children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth
generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on
the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Ex.
20:3-6
God gives us an insight into who He is in this commandment—jealous,
punishing, and merciful. But this command is meant to deal with
idolatry, superstition, magic, prognostication, sacrilege, atheism,
and agnosticism. (You might remember that while Moses was receiving
the Decalogue, the people were busy melting gold for the golden calf
to worship!)
Atheism denies that God exists, while agnosticism questions His
actuality. Most of us can safely say that these don’t pertain to us.
How about idolatry? Is there anything you cherish more than or as
much as God? How about superstition? Was that a black cat that
just crossed my path? How about magic or sorcery? We may not take
part in this, but many people, especially our youth, are intrigued
with Satanism and the occult. Something as simple as a ouija board can
lead to more interest! Have you talked to your children lately?
Prognostication - have you looked it up yet? - is the field of
clairvoyance or divination. Are you watching John Edwards or
Kreskin on TV? Gone to a fortune teller lately; how does your
horoscope look today? Sacrilege means to treat unworthy the
sacraments or other liturgical actions, persons, things or places
consecrated to God. How important to you is the Eucharist? Are you
walking in and out of church service as though it were your living
room?
These are tough questions—they are meant to be. God commands
us to put absolutely nothing before Him. We are to honor Him
above all else. Ponder this commandment. Is there any other god in our
lives?
