A Short History of Trinity
Church
Trinity, Parkersburg, dates from 1843 when the Reverend Thomas
Smith arrived in Parkersburg. According to local records Trinity, it would seem, was
the third church to be founded in this community.
The cornerstone for the first building was laid on July 11, 1846,
but the Reverend Mr. Smith did not live to see the building completed. He died April
4, 1847 and is buried in the foundation of the original building. The original
church building was completed in May of 1850.
Under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. William Hyland the church
built a handsome rectory which still stands at the corner of 5th and Juliana and now
serves as offices for the parish and other community ministries. During the last
years of Fr. Hyland's ministry the original building was torn down and a larger building
begun. That building, the present structure, was completed and consecrated on May 4, 1879
during the rector ship of the Reverend Robert A. Gibson.
For more than 150 years the Good News of God in Christ has been
shared by the clergy and people of Trinity Episcopal Church. It stands as a witness
to the healing and life-giving power of Christ's love to the business and governmental
communities in which it stands, and to the individuals and families who have found an
active and growing spiritual relationship with God as they call Trinity, 'home.'
